The area that is now Bloomsburg was part of the British Colonies of North America and thus had access to English weapons. As English guns became more popular, they were also imported into the United States. In 1836, a gunsmith named John Palfrey opened a shop in what is now known as downtown Bloomsburg. His shop was the first to sell pistols and rifles in this region. He continued to sell firearms until 1871. At that time, he moved his business to York County and reopened his shop there. After John Palfrey's death, his son Augustus performed his father'sbusiness operations until 1893 when it was taken over by George W. Beardmore who operated it until 1912. From then on, it was run by three successive generations of Beardsmores-until it passed away in 1938 to be acquired by the current proprietor, Milton Riddle Jr., who has kept it running for over fifty years! Throughout its history, the Beardsmore Shop has been one ofBloomsburg's most important commercial establishments. It has been responsible for the growthof local businesses and has helpedto expandthe town's economy both positively and negatively-most notably during World War II when many local jobs were requiredto support military efforts throughout Europe. Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania is a small town in northeastern Pennsylvania. The population was 7,451 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Beaver County borough of Bloomsburg. The town was founded in 1798 by James Bloomfield and others as a result of the Treaty of Paris after the American Revolutionary War. Bloomfield named it for himself and his wife, Betsy. The first school in Bloomsburg was established on March 14, 1800, with three students and one teacher. The first post office opened in 1801. In 1825, the town had a population of 1,100; by 1830 it had grown to 2,000; and by 1840 it had reached 4,000. In 1868-69 Bloomsburg built its first public building: a courthouse that still stands today. Bloomsburg is home to many different businesses and organizations including several universities which have campuses here such as Gettysburg College ( Gettysburg), Butler University ( Butler), Swarthmore College ( Swarthmore), and Drexel University ( Drexel). There are also numerous parks located within walking distance of the town center as well as several professional golf courses nearby including PGA Tour caliber courses like Tom Hill Country Club and Great Allegheny Golf Club.

Bloomsburg became a city on October 15, 1907 when it merged with neighboring Easton to form a larger metropolitan area. On December 3rd, 1960 Bloomsburg annexed the nearby town of Whitehall which had been part of Easton since 1899. The population was 57 at the 2000 census; 54 were male and 10 were female. The racial makeup was 69% white, 24% black or African American, 1% Native American, 2% Asian/Pacific Islander, 2% from other races and 5% two or more races. In 2002 there were 7 residents who identified themselves as atheist or agnostic; no religious affiliation was reported
