The earliest evidence for human habitation in Bloomsburg comes from archeological excavations conducted between 1905 and 1907 at Old Fort Price. The first European to visit Bloomsburg was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 when he sailed up the Susquehanna River from New York City bound for Catania in Italy. He noted two villages on both banks of the river - one called Baia dei Fiori (Bay of Flowers) because of its many flowers, and another referred to as Villa degli Albertini (House of Ali). In 1681, John Penn established himself near where modern-day University Park stands today after winning an election against nobleman William Penn's candidate Nicholas Swartzell. Penn built his house at what is now known as College Hill while also establishing a mill here which he used to create paper products for export to Europe. In 1758, during King George II's War with France, Captain Anthony Wayne discovered oil reserves near present-day Mount Carmel while marching his army through central Pennsylvania along present-day US Route 11/19 towards Frenchtown Gap. By 1800, oil production had become so extensive in this region that companies such asPennsylvania Coal Company were formed based in this area; these companies constructed large factories throughout Pennsylvania until World War II when moving industry became difficult due to wartime restrictions on resources exports). Bloomsburg is a city in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 31,567 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Berks County and the largest city in Northern Pennsylvania. Bloomsburg is also home to the University of Pennsylvaniana (Penn State), one of three universities in Pennsylvania. The first permanent settlement in what is now Bloomsburg was made on Mayflower Compact day by English colonists John Winthrop and his brother Christopher Wren. On December 24, 1682, a group of colonists from Yorktown landed at what is now called Mullica Hill and laid down their claims to the land that would become Bloomsburg. They were joined by other early settlers from Boston who had come overland from there on boats following the Susquehanna River. In 1734 John Dickinson founded Lancaster College as a private academy for young men and women in Lancaster County with initial funding from George Washington. In 1838, when Pennsylvania became an state, it passed an act providing for public education through school districts statewide including those within counties which did not have such institutions as Lancaster College or Philadelphia Academy; this Act created Delaware Valley School District No. 1 which included parts of what are now Bloomsburg Township and Easton Township along with parts of Reading Borough. In 1852–53 a new township was formed out of portions of Delaware Valley School District No. 1 and Easton Township; this township was named after James Buchanan - its first mayor - who served as its representative on Lebanon Street (now Buchanan Ave.) between Easton Avenue and I-95W where he later resided until his death in 1901 In 1905 James Buchanan's grandson Hinton Buchanan succeeded him as Mayor of Bloomsburg; he held office until 1934 when he resigned due to illness On November 3rd 1906 local resident Charles Wuhl killed four whites who were illegally hunting deer near Bald Eagle Lake while they were resting under cover near Aitkin Creek Bridge across Bald Eagle Creek; Wuhl was tried but found not guilty by reason of insanity before being committed to mental hospital In 1948 Bethlehem Steel Corporation merged with General Motors Company forming GMAC which continued to operate independently until 1984 when it merged into Chrysler Corporation . During that time Bethlehem Steel Corporation operated as steel mills around town while GMAC operates as one large company headquartered in Bloomfield Hills Michigan . Due to all these changes many people left town for good during the late 1980s because so much change took place within Steelstown Borough
