Bloomsburg is located on the anthracite coal mining district and was once a manufacturing center for textiles and other goods. The first settler in what became Bloomsburg was Nicholas Hanna in 1795. By 1825, there were 11 families living in town. In 1827, John Morse established a mill here that eventually became one of the largest mills in North America. In 1843, William Cockerill opened a gristmill here that still operates today as Cockerills Mill & Elevator Company. In 1860, five brothers founded the paper company Brown Brothers and Friends which became one of the most powerful paper companies in America until it merged with The New York Times Company in 1912. In 1898, David Sanger bought 3/4 acre (1 km²) of land east of town for $5 per acre (0·79 ha). He began to build what would become his future residence called Sanger House which stands to this day as one of Bloomsburg's landmarks. During World War II many local businesses helped support the war effort by producing munitions or providing services such as trucking ammunition around Pennsylvania and across country to help keep military installations functioning during wartime shortages caused by scarcity within Pennsylvanian resources themselves - including Coal Mines near Venango but also Iron Mountain Mine near Lewisburg due to their strategic location just north of Philadelphia along I-75 corridor between those two metropolises - giving people all over PA access to what were then some pretty serious economical opportunities! A great example are: The Paper Kites Factory at Easton where they made thousands of kites all while generating more than $2 million dollars worth of "economic value" for our community...not bad when you consider that back then ~$5 could buy ya lot close to Center City!
