Bloomsburg is a town in blois County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from "bluestown", an English word meaning "a place where blue flowers grow". In 1825, John Dickinson and his family moved to what is now Bloomsburg from Lancaster. In 1828, James Kapp built a log cabin on the east side of the Susquehanna River in what is now Bloomsburg. James Kapp was one of the first white men to settle in what is now Bloomsburg Township. He started a mill there that still operates today. The community of Bloomsburg was founded on October 16, 1786 by Captain John Butler and his wife Judith Weems with land grants from Colonel Nicholas Woodford. The first store opened in 1787 and it had five doors - two for sale items (the inventory list shows that there were no products) and four for storage items such as clothes, furniture and implements of husbandry (such as plows). A post office called Bloomingdale was established in 1791 and remained open until 1865; it was moved to its present location elk-wise across the Susquehanna River from where it operated for over 100 years before being retired effective February 1st, 1997 When William Penn arrived at Easton in 1772 he found much of northwestern Pennsylvania unoccupied because of frontier conditions which continued until after his death: “It appeared probable that there would be very few people living beyond those who had been compelled to abandon their homes by arms or disease” (Pennsylvania Historical Society Quarterly 12:3 [1941], pgs 348-349). Consequently Penn began investigations into possible locations for a new capital city so he could provide leadership and guidance for all who lived within its boundaries – this included settlers near Philadelphia – but no decisions were made until November 8th when he sent three commissioners to explore various sites including Bethlehem/Easton/New Castle Township consisting mostly of loyalist refugees who had fled during British Invasion days while also partaking in hostilities against Great Britain The commissioners returned home with proposals for Blairtowne (later Blair), Whitehall (later York) on Catoctin Mountain overlooking Valley Forge Battlefield & Monmouth County Courthouse Complex where they recommended moving provincial government services such as courtrooms & prisons from Westminster – then under British rule – to easton if necessary; provision should also be made for an arsenal & schoolhouse at Monmouth County Courthouse Complex if war broke out; further consideration should be given to establishing Amherst–Blairville–Northumberland about 12 miles northeast of Philadelphia along Schuylkill River valley Governor Tryon became alarmed over these recommendations as they did not consider Blairtowne or Whitehall viable capital cities due then existing infrastructure including roads etc., transportation limitations within surrounding counties precluding dense population growth potential & potential conflict withPhiladelphia’s rapidly expanding commercial center’s industrial area . accordingly Tryon ordered surveyors George Washington Dixon & Ebenezer Mifflin to prepare preliminary sketches designating Bethlehem/Easton/New Castle Township cores as desired new capitals with western parts becoming additional towns within these boundaries This order setting back efforts by New Englanders already making advances towards establishing capitals outside Philadelphia led some sources historians speculate may have been motivated by sectionalism rather than any pressing federal issues at hand .
