Bethlehem is a small town in the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania region. It is located on the southern border of Allentown, about 10 miles northeast of Reading. The population was 3,611 at the 2010 census. Bethlehem is one of the oldest towns in Pennsylvania and has been settled by colonists from England since 1681. The first settlers arrived in what is now Bethlehem Township on December 12, 1753, and they named their new community after George Washington's birthplace - Mount Vernon. In 1834, Bethlehem became a city under charter granted by the Pennsylvania General Assembly. When Philadelphia became an independent country in 1876 (following its secession from British America), Bethlehem remained an incorporated borough until it amalgamated with Allentown on March 15, 1938 to form the present-day City of Bethlehem. The history of Bethlehem can be traced back to 1681 when English colonists arrived in what is now western Pennsylvania as part of the Plantation System designed to secure land for English settlers who would come to populate North America during this period of large-scale European immigration. At that time there were only scattered villages and hamlets existing within today's Lehigh Valley region - all but one being smaller settlements dating back to before 1700 AD which constituted parts of Huntingdon County and Delaware County respectively. On December 12th 1753, a group of men led by Captain John Smith erected a small cabin near where Uniontown stands today while surveying lands grants given by King George II following his victory over Lord Pennsylvanian at Yorktown two months earlier on October 14th 1751. The original settlement at Bethlehem consisted merely of six or seven residents - most likely some men armed with rifles and shotguns Surveyors had received permission from King George II to establish certain posts along both sides of the Susquehanna River as part of his efforts to secure more direct control over portions eastward extending into New Jersey and up into York County including area now known as Allentown Township (now Lehigh Valley). Along with other colonies founded throughout Pennsylvania during this era such as Westmoreland County (later Lancaster) and Berks County (later Harrisburg), these early settlers were motivated by land acquisition opportunities rather than any religious affiliation or conversion thereto; indeed manyetsythe original British colonists arriving in what are now eastern PA were Protestant Scots-Irish Presbyterians fleeing religious persecution in Ireland prior to independence there in 1800 AD!
