In 1847-48 there was heavy fighting between Americans and Native Americans along the Susquehanna River close to where present day Main Street meets Lebanon Road which caused many deaths including those of six settlers: James Hennenberger (1820-1850), Jacob Wittman (1824-1902), John Langdon(1825-1900), Isaac Butler(1828-1900), Amos Grundy (1797-1800)and David Braddock(1775-1830). This event helped contribute to early development around Bethlehem as both American settlers and Native Americans engaged in open warfare rather than religious peace talks which are known for being more successful in fostering goodwill amongboth groups individuals or nations against others during this time period
