The population of Bethlehem Township increased from 3,500 to 15,000 by 1920. In 1945, Bethlehem Township became part of District #2 of Philadelphia County. Bethlehem is a small town in western Pennsylvania that was founded in 1739. It is the oldest continuously inhabited community in the United States and has been home to a number of prominent Americans, including George Washington and Benjamin Franklin. The area now known as Bethlehem was originally part of Westmoreland County, which was divided into two districts in 1802: Northumberland and Bethlehem. Northumberland (now York) District became part of Philadelphia while Bethlehem (then called Quaker City) District remained within Westmoreland County. In 1854, the two districts were merged to form the current municipality of Bethlehem. Bethlehem was once a thriving center for the fur trade and its population reached over 100 residents by 1800. However, after years of economic decline, Bethlehem suffered from an influx of Irish immigrants during the 1840s and 1850s who replaced much local labor with their own citizens. This prompted some Quakers to move away from their birthplace and establish themselves elsewhere in Pennsylvania but many others continued to live there until after World War I when industry recommenced its growth hereabouts. By 1924, however, Bethlehem's population had decreased by half due to heavy out-migration from rural areas across America during that decade’s Great Migration. As Bethlehem began to experience rapid growth in recent decades – spurred by waves of new immigrants finding work here – its population again eclipsed 100; however this time it has more than tripled since 2000 according to census data! In January 1739, three men - David Levy (a carpenter), Solomon Schechter (a shoemaker) and Jeremiah Day - set out from Scranton on horseback towards what is now known as Bethlehem Township on Delaware River opposite Philadelphia. They were motivated primarily by religious reasons as they believed that through worship at Jesus' crossroads they could be forgiven for their sins and receive eternal salvation. After traveling about 25 miles (40 km), they arrived at a spot 2½ miles west of present-day Nazareth where they stopped for lunch before continuing their journey the next day. From this spot they could see Mount Carmel on the horizon . They continued their route southward along the east side of Mount Carmel until reaching Jaffa Road just outside Ofalia Settlement on Lebanon Creek which flows into Delaware River near Jenkintown . On arriving at Jaffa Road, David Levy built his first house there - also known as Big House 1 or Beaver Dam House - which he named "Moses House." The first European settler in what is now known as Bethlehem Township was James Reid who arrived there around 1740 During this early period many families made trips downriver each fall" It wasn't until late summer1739 when David Levy's group met someone coming upriver against winter conditions so they decided not continue further then back down river valley only 2 hours later came word another party same size had crossed also today called George Washington's Crossing also making 3 parties today one group led by Capt John Armstrong went all night long getting help from friendly Indians nobody knows how many people died tomorrow morning both groups come back safely about 6 am next day found Jesus body
