Bethlehem, Pennsylvania is located in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania and is part of the Bethlehem-Allentown metropolitan area. As of 2010, it had a population of 71,362. The township was formed on November 3, 1795, from parts of Huntingdon Township and Westmoreland Township. Bethlehem is one of the oldest townships in Pennsylvania and has been called "The City on the Hill" for many years because of its location atop an hill that overlooks all of Bethlehem County and all but a small part of Luzerne County. Bethlehem's rich history began with its founding as a small town on November 3, 1795 by Loyalists who fled to this area during the American Revolution. The town was named after King George II's grandson, James Johnston (1727-1810), who had helped lead British forces in North America during the war against France. The town quickly became prosperous thanks to its strategic location at the top of a hill overlooking much of central PA and its close proximity to major trade routes. In 1814, Bethlehem became home to what is now known as York University after land donated by wealthy Quaker investors. Over time, other businesses flourished in Bethlehem such as clothier John Woolen mill; clockmaker Jacob Riis started his company here in 1837; banana plantation owner Isaac Isaacs built what remains one of PA's largest plantations; and steel manufacturer George Romney founded his company here in 1903. During World War II, Bethlehem played an important role in Allied military efforts by providing munitions production facilities and housing troops stationed here until 1945 when hostilities ended. Afterward, many businesses closed while joblessness gripped the cityscape until recent economic growth has brought new life back to some key sectors including retail sales and professional services dating back to 2011 when Google announced it would be establishing a $200 million data center complex within walking distance from downtown Bethlehem which will create hundreds new jobs over several decades! Today's vibrant community includes numerous cultural attractions including Theaters at Wilson Square where plays are presented throughout the year; Artisans' Market which offers local crafts from around town; Moyer Park – home to two large golf courses (one public) as well as several playgrounds/sports fields; The Jameson Distillery – one half mile walk from downtown provides visitors with unique insights into traditional whiskey production methods through interactive exhibits included on tour; miles-long shopping streets filled with galleries (including some housed inside historical buildings); Stroudsburg Open Air Museum - open daily 9am-6pm Apr.-Oct., tours depart every 15 minutes or so throughout daytime hours except Sundays when there are no tours available; various restaurants located within walking distance including Papa John’s Pizza ($) In addition to these usual suspects tourist traps like casinos or theme parks there are also smaller villages situated throughout northwestern PA that offer activities not found elsewhere: Thornberry near Allentown offers hiking/mountain biking opportunities as does White Sands State Park just east of Scranton.; Carbondale features breweries along with art galleries & theatersasiną Old Fort Harrisburg;; Wilkes Barre features excellent hiking trails surrounding lakeshore communities as well as Quinnipiac College which lies less than 2 miles south across Route 202 from downtown Wilkes Barre
