Bethlehem, Pennsylvania is a small town in the Lehigh Valley region of central Pennsylvania. The population was 9,874 at the 2010 census. Bethlehem is one of the oldest settlements in North America and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 3000 years. The area that makes up Bethlehem was first settled by European colonists in 1681. Bethlehem was incorporated as a borough on March 14, 1854. In 1881, Bethlehem became the capital of what would become West Virginia when the state was created from parts of five other states. West Virginia became an independent country after its independence and renamed itself United States of America in 1907. This left Bethlehem with no American capital city to call home until it regained its status as a borough on December 2, 1916. The growth of Bethlehem began slowly but surely during World War I and II due to heavy military spending by both sides in those times.heavy industry had moved into new facilities throughout downtown during this time which led to increased traffic and pollution problems which were quickly solved through public works projects like Peddle Street Bridge Replacement, Veterans Memorial Park and renovations to Stroudsburg Municipal Airport (now Blair International Airport). After World War II ended, much of these same businesses moved out or closed down as Interstate 95 took over most travel in the area, leaving Downtown with just a few small businesses remaining until more recent redevelopment efforts brought about even more new businesses intothe district including several restaurants/cafes along Peddle Street between Market and Second Streets (now First Avenue) back in the 2000s-2010s decade while also initiating plans for planned mixed use development around First Avenue Station which would include hotel/motel space, office buildings etc., potentially creating another Main Street thoroughfare within Downtown boundaries once again! As mentioned earlier however many residents have long felt that they are ' sandwiched between two busy cities' - Philadelphia and Readstown - making it difficult to get involved with either side's culture or nightlife activities because they're located so close together - something which has only gotten worse since Interstate 95 bypassed downtown completely decades ago! Despite this though some groups continue working hard towards improving conditions for all residents living inside Downtown; specifically targeting nightlife activities and reducing traffic congestion on Market Street corridor leading directly from South Side streets onto First Ave where services like UberEATS allow customers direct access without having to weave their way through continuous carpooling madness!

As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 955. Bethlehem is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The town was founded by Native Americans in 1765 as part of William Penn's settlement of north central Pennsylvania. Bethlehem's first settler was John Dolan, who built a cabin near today's Center Street and Northampton Avenue. A gristmill was built on South Mountain about 1805, and soon thereafter mills became important local businesses. In 1829, Bethlehem was incorporated as a borough under state law; its first mayor was John Fenton (1824-30). After being annexed by Lehigh County in 1868, Bethlehem experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century due to railroad construction within its boundaries; however, during World War II it experienced significant damage from aerial bombing raids by American forces. In 1951, after much debate among residents over whether to continue to be an independent borough or become part of neighboring Philadelphia,[1] Bethlehem chose to become an urban township under city ordinance effective that year.[2][3] Bethlehem has seen many changes over its history including becoming one of the most diverse towns in America with multiple languages spoken fluently by residents[4], experiencing rapid gentrification following suburban annexation into what were once majority white neighborhoods[5], experiencing heavy job loss during industrial decline throughout much of 2009-2015[6], seeingentricity increase due to increasing popularity for professional sports teams like Eagles and Phillies,[7] recent gentrification led to increased crime rates which have since been reversed[8],[9],[10],[11]

Bethlehem was founded by Quakers who were fleeing religious persecution in England. The first settler in Bethlehem was Amos Eaton who built a cabin on the side of a hill overlooking the town. The first Methodist Missionary Society arrived here in 1806 and established a chapel which still stands today. In 1812, John Nixon moved his family to Bethlehem from Huntingdon Township, Pennsylvania and they set up home on Main Street where they remain until this day. The city of Bethlehem was chartered as an independent municipality on February 12th, 1854. On December 1st of that year, Abner Douglass became the first African American to be elected as mayor of Bethlehem when he won against incumbent Daniel Carroll. After serving two terms as mayor, Douglass left town to start a new life in Rochester (New York). In 1865, during the American Civil War, many residents fled into nearby Reading Borough due to Confederate soldiers marching through the area looking for food supplies and shelter. Many homes were destroyed or taken over by Union forces; however some remained standing until after World War II when they were cleared out for housing developments. In 1924 Mayor Isaac Luebeck ordered all public buildings within city limits be dismantled so that building codes could be developed for postwar communities such as Bethlehem which would only have private property rights instead of government constraints like those found back then within townships/villages/cities etc.. Today remnants of these former municipal structures can still be seen inside the boundaries of present-day Bethlehem while much more recent development takes place outside those boundaries entirely on privately owned land adjacent to various highways including I-610 & PA Route 22
