The first handguns were designed in 1792 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and Samuel Colt. The pistols were called derringers, as they did not have a revolving barrel like rifles. Derringers became popular in America during the 19th century because of their simplicity and ease of use. In 1837, George Smith & Wesson began producing revolvers with sights that could be adjusted to different distances. This allowed shooters to target practice or hunt game at various distances without having to adjust the gun each time. By 1845, revolver manufacture had spread to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania where John Moses Browning started making pistols using his new design.
