Bethlehem, Pennsylvania is a small town in the Allegheny County of Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,838 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Bethlehem was founded in 1795 by John Peters as Petersburgh and named for King Bethlehem of Israel. In 1814, it was renamed Bethlehem Township because of its location in what is now Allegheny County. The township had a population of 912 in 1800 and 1,100 in 1830. In 1881, the township became part of the new Anthracite Coal Fields subdivision which included much larger towns such as Wilkes-Barre and Scranton. By 1900, Bethlehem's population had dropped to 602 people and it remained that way until 2000 when it grew again to 710 with the addition of Scranton annexed into the township boundaries. In 2002, Bethlehem consolidated with nearby Mifflinburg to form one municipality with a total population of over 12,000 residents (the largest municipal merger in Pennsylvania). At that time Mifflinburg also became an Urban Area School District which operates all public schools within its boundaries save those within individual boroughs which are operated by separate school districts; these boroughs are located primarily outside of Philadelphia proper but share some common facilities including stadiums/parks and other shared infrastructure such as water systems. However, recent economic downturns have caused some stagnation within the community as well as declines in manufacturing jobs that once employed many residents hereabouts. Despite these challenges, Bethlehem remains one of Pennsylvania's most culturally rich municipalities with attractions such as its art galleries and traditional Christmas festivals
Bethlehem was founded in 1717 by the Tryon family, who were also the first proprietors of the township. The family name originated in Scotland and is derived from Bethlehem Chapel, which was erected on a hill overlooking Bethlehem Township in 1712. In 1815, Bethlehem became a city after it was incorporated as a borough.
