Bethlehem's history began in 1739 when John Houstoun, who had been born in Scotland and came to America as a settler, founded a farm here. Bethlehem gained town status in 1854. The first post office in Bethlehem opened on October 12 of that year. The present structure was built in 1892 and has served the community since then. Bethlehem is located within the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre metropolitan area. The town of Bethlehem was founded by Scotsman John Houstoun on November 3, 1739 as part of what would become the United States of America. He named his new settlement after his birthplace—Edinburgh—in Scotland. At first it consisted of only a few hundred acres (0 hectares). By 1800, several thousand people resided within the boundaries of what would become Bethlehem Township and its post office became known as "the Hub." In 1854, Bethlehem Township was divided into two sections: North and Southsections; Northsection became known as "the Upper Town" while Southsection became known as "the Lower Town." John Houstouns descendants continued to live in Northsection until about 1920 when they left for better opportunities found elsewhere in America or emigrated back home to continue their heritage there. Today's residents are descended from many previous generations: those who arrived between 1739 and 1850 (Normanians), those who settled between 1870 and 1890 (Scotch-Irish), those who arrived after 1900 (Italian Americans). On October 12th 1892 - one day before statehood - George Beal erected the cornerstone for government center located at 4125 Lancaster Avenue which still stands today with all original materials inside including engine room & bell tower!
