Bethlehem, Pennsylvania is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Bethlehem is located on the banks of the Schuylkill River and is served by the Bethleheem Township School District. The first European settlers of what would become Bethlehem were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1681. The area that now makes up Bethlehem was part of Easton township until 1837 when it became part of Butler Township. Bethlehem's history dates back to 1727 when a group of Englishmen set out from London for what would become Philadelphia with the goal of establishing an American colony. After reaching Northumberland County they divided their supplies and returned home before continuing on to form a new settlement at what would become Bethlehem which they named Palmyra after Princess Palmyra of England. In 1734 John Forbes erected a sawmill and gristmill on present-day Vine Street in what would later be called Bethlehem while construction was ongoing on his house which still stands today as a historic landmark known as Forbes House Museum (now known as United Methodist Church). During this time frame also two churches were built: First Presbyterian Church in 1865 and then Baptist church in 1867-68. These churches are now both gone but their seeds planted can still be seen today with the founding of United Methodist Church in 1892 that remains one of only three such churches remaining in all eleven counties within Butler County! In1898, followingecond World War I, Bethlehem voted to join organized municipalities within Butler County though it did not take long before disagreements arose between its members over issues such as zoning laws and budget concerns leading to a split which led to the establishment of Westmoreland Boroughs within Butler County! This event marks an important milestone for Bethlehem as it marked the first time any municipality had been established outside the original 11 boroughs that made up ButlerCounty! Furthermore, since these changes occurred another community has Official status within our county limits; Bedminster has been officially recognized by our government as being an incorporated town since 2003!
