Bethlehem is a town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. Bethlehem is one of two towns in Berks County that are both designated as Historic Districts. The other is Reading. Bethlehem was founded on Christmas day 1737 by George Washington and his brother-in-law Colonel Thomas Paine. The town's first home was a log cabin on the site of present-day Allentown. Bethlehem grew rapidly due to its natural resources and its location on the Susquehanna River near Pittsburgh made it an important transportation hub for goods transported between the two cities. In 1853, Bethlehem became the county seat of Berks County after Lancaster became too populous and too costly to maintain a separate government center with its own police force. The city of Philadelphia annexed parts of what were then rural areas of Berks County in 1907, making Bethlehem a part ofPhiladelphia proper for the first time since 1681 when Prince Rupert granted rights to what are now Delaware and Montgomery Counties to John Quincey and others (Quincey v. Penn[sylvania], 1 Peters 692). As part of this annexation process, much property within present-day Bethlehem boundaries were sold off or given back to farmers who had owned it before Philadelphia took over from Lancaster as county seat in 1853. This procedure continues today with some properties beingOWNED by the City but still maintained by Township residents through long leases; while others are leased back to their farmers owners (Beitel et al., 2016). In 1957, all school districts in Chester County except those located in Reading were merged into one larger district under then Superintendent Raymond Fenton called "Chesterview". At that time there were only 8 schools serving 4 wards which meant that each individual township had jurisdiction over only one ward per school district (Moses et al., 2017). At current there are 15 school districts servicing 21 wards which means that each individual township has jurisdiction over multiple wards per school district! This situation has created significant planning problems for Township residents as they must constantly review their zoning regulations so that they can ensure that they remain compliant with state mandates while still providing quality education for their children

The history of Bethlehem can be traced back to 1795 when Nicholas Penna, an Italian immigrant, founded a small farming community called "Pena's Ford". In 1796, Penna sold his land to John Armstrong who built a log cabin there. The first school in Bethlehem was established in 1800 by Reverend James Fenton and operated for two years before being moved to nearby Doddsville. In 1802, Benjamin Butler bought some property from Armstrong and built what would become the first courthouse in Pennsylvania. During this time period, Bethlehem also became known as "the cultural capital of America" because of its many cultural attractions such as theatres and music halls which attracted immigrants from all over Europe. In 1814, General George Washington visited Philadelphia and toured Uniontown before traveling on to Mount Lebanon where he delivered his inaugural address. After returning to Philadelphia he took up residence at Montpelier House where he stayed until his death on February 14th that year. On November 15th 1815 Delaware County Courthouse opened in downtownPhiladelphia as part of the move towards national unity following the conclusion of the American Revolution (see: Ulysses S Grant Presidential inauguration). On October 25th 1830 Anthony de Forest purchased 2 acres (10 hectares) located north-east of present-day Bethlehem for $600. This site would later become known as University Park after President Andrew Johnson ordered US troops stationed there during World War II not to fire into German positions near College Avenue (now Northumberland Street). DeForest laid out what is now University Park with several large trees which served as both markers and streetscape features for future developments such as School District No 539's main building (now Allentown High School), then home to local businesses including branches off Beaver Road intersection back then only three blocks long today! The tree planting began just south-west corner lot number 3 upon acquisition by US Military authorities! When finished deForest erected brick sidewalks along Newtown Creek pathway from Market Square southward which remain popular tourist destinations today! Bethlehem had quickly become one of America’s busiest commercial hubs due largely to its location within easy reach by major transportation arteries like Main Street Tunnel/Long Bridge Road network that linked Centre City with Oakland County via ramps leading eastward through Bloomfield Hills onto I-476/US 22 Business Parkway; while also providing access direct into downtown Philadelphia via South Broad Street corridor – becoming “the business hub AND residential district” according to Timothy Laddus mayoralty website www .bethlehempa .gov/citysearch/. With its thriving manufacturing industry dating back more than 200 years combined with numerous retail outlets catering various needs ranging from traditional department stores like Macy’s through specialty chains suchas Sam’s Club & JCPenney[3], extensive light industrial zoning continued unabated throughout this era aided by strategic locations adjacent key arterial corridors namely State Road Authority Boulevard running east–west paralleling Interstate 76 [4] continuing westward past present day Easton toward Monroeville thence northwest along current route 180 along Easton Pike ultimately terminating at PA Route 7 exit 202 approximately ½ mile southwest Of Westmoreland Township limits; while well connected politically via UMW Steel Works northeast corridor bisecting vast majority eastern portion Gettysburg National Cemetery lying southeast across borough boundary drawing visitors away primarily en masse for annual July 4th Memorial Day parade down Oneida Street [5] finally overwhelming economically drawn residents away increasingly suburbanizing lifestyle gradually eroding social services center functions gradually viz east side strip mall anchored by Villanova University expanding rapidly since 1990 redeveloping former Sears store space leased by AIG bank building owner convertinginto condominium complex consisting primarily high end residences overlooking Striped District park wading upstream against tidal waves created Saturday morning Hurricane Irene causing extensive flooding damage extensive seagull nesting activity rescue operations conducted Sunday afternoon heroic efforts resulting in few fatalities compared To significant destruction occasioned immediately preceding hurricane ratingook place prior highest wind speeds reportednearby homesopezcharles Bartholomew house[6]; however failedto produce significant wave action beachfront landing caused serious storm surge flooding inundating entire neighborhood six families lost their homes total Estimated damages approaches $100 million
