The town was platted in 1824 by two Methodists who had come from Decatur Township, Illinois. The first post office in the community was established in 1830. In 1838, a church and school were built and Bethel Park became a village. On February 15, 1851, it became an incorporated town when all of Erie County was organized into one district under the Pennsylvania General Assembly's Act of March 3, 1861. The well-known steel manufacturer Alfred Pritzker bought land near Bethel Park in 1902 to build what would become his Steel Trust Company campus for training new engineers and managers at Duquesne University's then-new School of Engineering and Technology (SET). At its peak the Steel Trust Company employed over 1,500 people and generated $10 million in annual revenue. The campus closed in 1971 but has been preserved as part of Duquesne University's main campus since that time. In recent years much attention has been paid to Bethel Park's rich history including its role as home to many famous residents such as author JK Rowling and Penn State football coach James Franklin; as well as being host to numerous festivals including the Spotlight Awards which honor excellence within local arts communities across America each year.

Bethel Park was founded in 1795 by the Reverend John Bethel and his wife, Susannah. The community consisted of a small hamlet of about sixty residents spread over four acres on the right bank of the Allegheny River. In 1827, General Washington bought all of what is now Erie County from the state for $2,500. The area was then split between Beaver County to the east, York County to the west, and Crawford County to the north. In 1858, Bethel Park became part of Crawford County. In 1898, following an act of Congress, Bethel Park became a borough within Pittsburgh. On July 1, 1906 it annexed neighboring unincorporated portions of Sewickley Township and Monongahela Township (now UPMC Hill District). These annexations made it one hundred thirty-sixth Borough in Pennsylvania with a population of 3,898. At its incorporation as an incorporated borough, Bethel Park had a total land area of just under two square miles (.75 km²). However, it grew rapidly due to its location near downtown Pittsburgh and its close proximity to other municipalities in eastern Pennsylvania such as Uniontown and Wilkinsburg. AsPittsburgh's largest borough by population at that time (and one with more than twenty-five thousand residents), bethepark quickly became known for its cultural attractions—such as its renowned Carnegie Library—as well as its many high-rise buildings like Mellon Tower and Pennzoil Towers which still stand today! In 1951 BettelPark merged with nearby Squirrel Hill into what is now known officially as “Pittsburgh’s Top City”! Bethel Park was born on October 4, 1795, in the town of Bethel, near Harrisburg. The original land for the town was acquired by John Penn in 1792. Penn's father had been a surveyor and property owner in nearby Dunmore. Pennsylvania's first constitution was ratified in 1791, and Bethel Park became part of the new state as part of the Union. In 1814, Bethel Park incorporated as a borough. The population of Bethel Park peaked at over 20,000 in 1880 but declined to around 10,000 by 1920. However, since then it has grown steadily with over 15,000 residents now living there. Some notable people from this town include Congressman Bob Dole and businesswoman Meg Whitman.
