The town was founded by Reuben and Esther (Foley) Bethel in 1800. They named their community after the biblical city of Bethlehem, which they had seen on a visit to Europe. In 1814, Bethel Park became a borough in McKean County and lost its independence when it merged with neighboring Whitehall Township. In 1842, Abraham Lincoln visited Bethel Park while he was campaigning for president; his speech there is reported to have been one of the most powerful speeches ever given at that time. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Union General Ulysses S. Grant's army passed through Bethel Park on its way from Harrisburg to Philadelphia; some residents joyfully welcomed him as he came into town and prepared for battle. After the war ended in 1865, Union troops burned down much of downtown Bethel Park as part of an effort to destroy all evidence of Confederate activity thereabouts. After the war ended,Bethel Park experienced rapid growth due to numerous textile mills being established nearby in what is now Allegheny County (then Westmoreland County). The population reached 2,604 by 1880 but declined steadily until it reached 1,362 at the 2000 census due largely to natural attrition and migration from other parts of McKean County into Bethel Park over that decade-plus period. Nevertheless, local boosters managed to keep bethe park alive until 1992 when it officially died along with several other towns within Monroeville Borough due to consolidation among suburban Pittsburgh municipalities following enactment of laws known as "The Monroeville Act".
