Bethel Park is a small town located in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. Bethel Park is part of the Reading, PA–NJ–DE metropolitan area and is home to the Harrisburg-Carlisle Airport. The first Europeans to visit what is now Bethel Park were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1681. The English settlement started up in 1759 as a farmstead called "New Hennemansburgh." It was renamed Bethel after George Washington's daughter by his first wife, Martha Arlington (née Allen). In 1824, the land that makes up present-day Bethel Park was donated by Daniel Webster to the State of Pennsylvania for school purposes. After a brief stint as a public school district administered by brothers Amos and Nathan Cummings (1827-1915), it became part of the newly formed Berks County School District on January 1, 1915. In 1907, the community raised money to purchase an airport which would serve them and other nearby communities until it was opened in 1929 by then-County Treasurer James Fenton Smith with assistance from local businesses and citizens. At its inception, Carlisle Airport served only military aircraft but has since evolved into one of America's leading commercial airports serving both domestic and international passengers with more than 150 airlines operating there today. Today’s airport features two runways--one measuring 3/21 mile long parallel to Route 322 and one measuring 6/23 miles wide at its widest point--and accommodates large passenger jets such as Boeing 737 MAX planes making stops at both Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). In 1930 when Bethel Park incorporated as a borough under state law it had just 7 residents; however over time it has grown rapidly due to waves of immigrants coming through Berks County during this time: Italians in 1925; Poles in 1927; Irishmen in 1931; Germans in 1933; Czechoslovakians in 1938; Japanese Americans during World War II Bethel Park became an official city within democratic government on February 15th 1969 having outgrown its Borough status which continued until October 15th 1978 when all municipalities within Berks County were merged into one entity known as “Berkshire Township” effective February 14th 1979 with all property values being aligned eastward across Route 322 thereby effecting many changes including increased taxes & services available throughout Township boundaries
