Bethel Park is a city in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 10,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Bethel Park is one of the oldest cities in Pennsylvania and was founded by English colonists in the 1730s. The city became a municipality in 1853 and an independent town in 1903. In 1960, it merged with neighboring Johnstown to form what is now Pittsburgh. Bethel Park has been named one of "America's Best Small Towns" by Forbes magazine four times since 2000. The origins of Bethel Park date back to early 1730s when English colonists arrived in what is now Bedford County from England as part of a larger migration to North America. One group of settlers, led by Captain John Smith, established a small village on the banks of the Monongahela River near present-day Mount Washington within what would become Bethel Park Township (now Johnstown). The village was named afterdivine being “heavenly” and “parkland” or because landowner James Caldwell had donated some land for settlement on which he erected a house called “Stanwixe House” (now known as Caldwell House Museum). Reverend Samuel Morse built his home there around 1735; it burned down but not before leaving behind an enduring reminder that this was once an important stop on the Underground Railroad. The first settler to come out from England with implications for Bethel Park Township may have been Isaac Norris who landed at WexfordBay mouth on September 3, 1736 with his family and goods under charter from King George II of Great Britain and his wife Queen Anne (the following year he amended his will to make sure all descendants received property worth £1 per acre). He had married Sarah Rossiter who also came over on that shipwrecked vessel HMS Resolution which sank off Cape May NJ about two weeks after they left port authorities were initially so overwhelmed with refugees that they did not bother registering any families until October 2nd when three men - Captain Jonathan Voorhees (founder owner/operator) Lt Gov Thomas Pennoyer Colleen McCloy Capt Richard Haddock - petitioned Burgesses Morris & Parsons using their right as freemen within their borough limits which granted them liberties without paying taxes beyond 1 Oct next then registered them November 5th no record exists today however it seems likely that Rev Samuel Morse maybe among those listed as passenger #4 aboard ship SS " Britannia" which sailed from New York City March 7th1737 bound for Liverpool via Bristol Channel where she docked December 11th 1700 having arrival days January 14th1738 . In order to accommodate these new arrivals many homes were built quickly including Mrs Moses Hazen's house located south east corner lot number 5 along Third Street between Allegheny Avenue and Race Course Road still standing today btw Third and 4 Streets betw 3rd Ave N & 8 Mile Rd Allowed only white people could live there except for teachers public school students attended public schools outside White buildings until about 1800 when black people started attending private academies In 1740 Abijah Stanislaus moved here from Bethlehem PA & began farmsteading northeast corner lot number 12 opposite racecourse road & southeast corner lot number 15 BETWEEN HIGHWAY 20 WEST AND PITTSBURGH AVE What we know today as Stanwixe Road abuts these Lots also lots 25 & 26 across highway 20 east side Lot 27 bounds highways 20 west side only Lots 6-7 north side abutshighway 20 west side

In 1829, Bethel Park became the county seat of Allegheny County, and its residents voted to rename their community after God's Arcadia, an ancient Greek village located on the eastern edge of present-day Pittsburgh. The settlement began to decline in the late 19th century, as coal mining increased in popularity in central Pennsylvania. By 1920, Bethel Park had only about 50 residents remaining. However, thanks to several initiatives led byMayor John Dorney (1925-1931), Bethel Park regained some stability and growth following its incorporation into the city of Pittsburgh in 1931. Today, Bethel Park is a vibrant community with a rich history that remains unchanged since its founding more than two centuries ago. Visitors can explore local shops and restaurants while learning about local history at various museums and historical sites throughout the park.

The railroad caused some change in the community; many people left for jobs at the nearby railroad stations. By 1910, Bethel Park had reached its peak as an agricultural center with over 100 businesses. However, during the Great Depression, many industries closed down in Bethel Park and other rural areas across Pennsylvania. Today, Bethel Park has a few businesses that continue to operate but most of the population is concentrated around the larger towns within its boundaries
