However, because there were no national forests in that territory, much of the land within modern-day Bethel Park was unowned by either party and remained undeveloped until it was purchased by Penn Central Railroad trustees in 1916 for $5 million as part of their effort to create a new line through centralPennsylvania called the Homestead Line. The town originally consisted only of a few homes and businesses along Kinnear Avenue between Westmoreland Road and Northumberland Avenue; however, shortly after purchase, Penn Central began works on an extensive engineering project dubbed "The Great Western Railroad" which would connect Pittsburgh with Erie via abandoned mining regions near Scranton and Wilkes-Barre. In addition to developing over 4 square miles (10 km²) of new industrial land adjacent to Kinnear Avenue between Westmoreland Road and Northumberland Avenue—including many factories used during World War II—the railroad also constructed numerous other roads and tracks within present day Bethel Park itself as well as dozens of smaller buildings including two stores, twenty-two houses, a post office, five churches (oneMethodist), three schools (grades K–12), four hotels/motels (), six grocery stores/marketplaces (), thirteen ferries/ships (fourteen different types), sixteen theaters (), fifty-six store yards ()—the railroad also created 535 jobs (). Although construction on The Great Western Railroad ended abruptly before completion due to financial difficulties caused by increased competition from newly developed Interstate highways development throughout America during the late 1940s,, many aspects of its legacy remain evident today such as preserved evidence from its various construction projects such as vestibules and trackside arches found at various locations within present day Bethel Park including Kinnear Ave., Westmoreland Rd., Northumberland Ave., Monroeville Rd., Keystone Ave., Brown St., Steubenville Blvd., Southgate Dr..
