Bethel Park is a small town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,887 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Bethel Park was Ebenezer Sprinkle in 1784. He and his family were the first white people to live within the present-day boundaries of Bethel Park. Sprinkle erected a log cabin on his farmstead on October 12, 1784. The cabin was destroyed by fire in 1836 but was rebuilt and enlarged bysprinkle's son Ebenezer Jr., who also built a gristmill and store on the same site in 1841. In 1847, John Armstrong founded Armstrong's Store, which became one of the largest mercantile businesses in Allegheny County. In 1861, John Armstrong opened what is now known as Armstrong's Brewery on Elm Street near Main Street in Bethel Park after purchasing an abandoned brewery building from Andrew Mellon. The beer business continued until 1965 when it closed due to competition from Miller Brewing Company. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln visited Bethel Park while campaigning for president; he stopped at Armstrong's Brewery for dinner before continuing his tour of duty that night at Ford’s Theatre nearby. Bethel Park was a small, rural community in the heart of Philadelphia and one of the original thirteen municipalities in Pennsylvania. It was founded by Quakers in 1795 as a farmstead on Lancaster Road east of present-day Mount Airy. The first settler, David Bethel, died young in 1802. The town grew rapidly with the arrival of new settlers, many of whom were Methodists. In 1824, the Township Act created five townships within Philadelphia County: Northumberland (including Bethel Park), Southwark, Randolph (including Bethel Park), Westphalia (including Bethel Park), and Villanova (including parts of what are now Boroughs Of Camden and East Falls). By 1840 there were over 1,500 residents living in Bethel Park and its outlying areas. In 1848, following riots that occurred throughout the United States during the “Great American Famine” caused by a series of bad harvests followed by high prices for foodstuffs such as corn and wheat, Governor Andrew Johnson ordered allPhiladelphia counties to establish taxcollection districts known as assessorships. The purpose of these districts was to bring about equitable distribution of taxation burdens among township taxpayers who resided within specific county boundaries. For each assessment district established within each county, an assessor collected taxes from property owners therein regardless of whether they lived within or outside those boundaries. In 1850, following creation of fifteen additional counties within Pennsylvania under governor John Pemberton—the third such action taken by Johnson—Bethel Park became part of Burlington County when that county was formed from portions of both Philadelphia and Northumberland Counties. In 1854–55 two more assessments districts were established within Philadelphia County: construction began on what is now University City while nominations for delegates to the National Academy OF Sciences were being compiled objected to because much land located therein had been exempt from taxation since its establishment as partof Chesterfield Township twenty years earlier; after deliberations by members from both Burlington County and Philadelphia City Council it was decided that bethepark should be included in University City so that its rich agricultural history would not be lost amidst rapid development adjacent thereto; accordingly school buildings still stand today at 15th & Market Streets near where Penn Central Station currently stands) The last major change to follow this period came about with annexation by Reading County which took place on November 3rd 1860 via an act passed by Congress concurrent with Lincoln’s inauguration having been prompted largely by concerns over growing trade links between Philadelphia and Reading which had become increasingly important due to expanding rail transportation opportunities across America. With this change most likely came increased commercial development along Lancaster Road including residences becoming available for purchase closer to downtown Phillies center while much farmland surrounding bethel park reverted back into farmer hands
