Bethel Park is a town in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 10,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. In 1856, settlers from Schuylkill County began to arrive in what is now Bethel Park and other areas around the town of Clinton. They brought their shotguns with them and soon started trading Shotgun Parts for rifles, pistols, saddles and farm implements. The first gun parts store in Bethel Park was opened by Wm. Hodge in 1865. By 1875 there were four stores operating in town – three operated by local men and one by John Coyle who had moved from New York City that year. The store locations did not change until 1979 when the last store closed its doors after 65 years of business operation; it was located on Keystone Avenue within walking distance of most residents (though it still sold guns through mail order). Thousands of abolitionists passed through the community during the 1860s and 1870s to freedom in Canada. In 1865, Bethel Park was incorporated as a borough. In 1903, it became part of Philadelphia when it was annexed by the city. In 1977, it merged with neighboring Kensington to form another borough called Kensington-West Chester.
