Gun cleaning history in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania began in the early 1800s. A group of men including John Fitzpatrick and James Hogg decided to start a small gunsmith shop on the corner of North Front and South State Streets. They named their business “Fitzpatrick & Hogg’s Gun Cleaning Shop.” The shop was open from 1821-1824. In 1825, Fitzpatrick&Hogg’s moved to what is now the bethel park section ofBethel Park. The original building still stands at 205 North Front Street today. In 1827, Fitzpatrick&Hogg’s started doing rifle repairs and also did some gunsmithing work for local farmers. In 1830, they opened up their own store which became known as “Fitzpatrick & Hogg’s Rifle Emporium.” From 1830-1836, Fitzpatrickson & Hogg operated their own store under the name of “The Bethel Arms Company.” This company continued making rifles until 1838 when they closed their doors because of financial problems. The last owner of this business was Daniel Hecox who operated it from 1840-1851 before it was sold to George Hecox who ran it until his death in 1861. It then passed through several families before being purchased by Elias Howe in 1865 who kept it intact until his death in 1903. After Elias Howe's death, it passed through several more owners before being donated to Bethel Park Historical Society in 1906 by Mrs Lillie Smeatonmaker (daughter of Elias Howe). At this point, many changes had taken place at the old Fitzpatrickson&Hogg's Gun Cleaning Shop over time; however, most importantly, the shop had been preserved and cared for by members of the society since 1906! The first settlement in what would become Bethel Park was made in 1785 when a group of Methodist missionaries founded an agricultural community called Horseshoe Bend on land bought from Chief Pittsborough for £1 (). In 1814, settlers from New York arrived and began farming what would be known as Northumberland Township (now Butler). They named their community after George Washington's home state of Virginia (at that time Northumberland County) because they thought he might have been born there. The first post office in Bethel Park was established in 1824. At that time it was called Mount Auburn and served only a section of Butler County near its originallocation; today it serves all Butler County including parts of Lawrenceburg and Allentown. In 1865, General Ulysses S Grant visited Bethel Park while campaigning against Confederate troops retreating through central Pennsylvania during the American Civil War. He stopped at one of his farms on his way back home and saw extensive deforestation for lumber being done by farmers there; he ordered them to stop immediately. That same year another group of Methodists moved into Bethel Park from Springboro to begin pastorizing local residents who were then living off farmlands near Uniontown Dam onthe Monongahela River which became known as "South Bethlehem." In 1882 when Northumberland Township split into two parts due to annexation by Lawrenceburg boroughs – South Bethlehem became Lawrenceburg Borough while Northumberland Township remained unincorporated – Bethel Park incorporated as a separate township with its own government. In 1914, South Bethlehem merged with neighboring Bellefonte Borough becoming one large municipality with its own governing body known as “Bellefonte Township Council” which still exists today within Butler County government limits but falls outside Philadelphia city boundaries

These changes include the introduction of high-speed Internet service which has led to increased traffic congestion on local streets;2001 Census data which illustrate how less-affluent residents have begun to lose out on key government services;and development along Delaware Avenue which has resulted in increased noise levels and property values below those seen in previous years.Despite these challenges, however,Bethel Park is still an important community whose history offers insights into various aspects of American life during this time period.
