Bethel Park is located on the south side of the Susquehanna River and is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Bethel Park were farmers who came to the area in the early 1800s. They built homes around a small creek that ran through their property. In 1822, they organized as a town and named it after their patron saint, Mary. The first mayor of Bethel Park was John Fenton. In 1861, when Fort Donelson was captured by Confederate forces during the American Civil War, many people from Bethel Park decided to stay behind and fight for the Union side. Many men from Bethel Park enlisted in the Union army and fought at Fort Donelson and other battles along the way. Afterward, many of these men returned home and started businesses in Bethel Park. Some of these businesses include a bakery called "The Sentinel" (now closed), an insurance company called "The Trustee", a grocery store called "Aunt Jemima's", and a mill that produced flour for local grocery stores. After World War II ended, many residents leftBethel Park for new opportunities near Pittsburgh or within commuting distance of those cities. However, some residents did remain in town until its incorporation as a borough in 1954. In 1974, it became an unincorporated community again before becoming part of Perry County on February 14th 1978 with 1,812 residents
Bethel Park was chartered by the Pennsylvania General Assembly on December 12, 1785. The town was named after the biblical figure, Abraham. It became a census-designated place (CDP) in 1974. The first settler in Bethel Park was Amos French. He and his family arrived in 1787. In 1802, John Smith founded a gristmill in the town square. In 1811, David Kushner began to farm in what is now the eastern part of Bethel Park. In 1814, Hiram Bingham built an addition to his home at 234 Main Street that became known as Maple Hall. In 1830, Isaac Geary opened a small grocery store at 209 Elm Street near present day Springwood Avenue and North Third Street. The first post office for Bethel Park was established on October 15, 1830, with Wm Horsburgh as its first director. On November 10 of that year, James Kapp erected a small frame house on lot No 2 north of Market Square which served as the first courthouse for Bethel Park until it moved to its current location on Maynard Road in 1880
