They set up an agricultural colony called Steel Township which attracted other farmers to their land over time; by 1840, all but one settler had left., In 1868, when Pittsburgh annexed Butler County into its city limits, Bethel Park became part of that city's new borough Zoning District 3A1 (later renamed North Side). That district included much of today's bethel park area as well as parts of Uniontown and South Side streets between Springdale Avenue and Monongahella Boulevard southward.) The borough was merged with nearby East Liberty Township on April 1, 1907 to form the current dayPittsburgh Borough government under Mayor Tom Murphy.. It served as government headquarters until 1978 when it was replaced by a new courthouse located at 5th Avenue and Market Street in Scranton Township.
