He started building what would become known as Husted's Mills which were among one of Pittsburgh's earliest example of large scale agriculture and manufacturing operations. The mills produced flour, yarn and cotton until 1936 when they were sold to Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company who closed them down in 1969 due to economic decline within Pittsburgh itself; however, some parts of these mills remain open today as Heritage Village amusement park rides and other heritage attractions such as an oldfashioned soda fountain known locally as "the Fountain".
