Berwick, Pennsylvania is a small town in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,191 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Berwick is named after General James Braddock and his regiment of Cavalry under Colonel John Forbes during the American Revolution. The first permanent English settlement in what is now Berwick Township was made by Captain George Monmouth on November 10, 1757. The colonists built a log cabin and called it Monmouth Station. On February 14, 1758, the first vote of the township was taken to name it Berwick because of General James Braddock's cavalry engagement at Bennington Heights that had occurred two days earlier in Vermont. In 1759, Captain Monmouth sold his interest in the station to Samuel Hays for $8 per acre (1/4 share). Samuel Hays farmed until 1814 when he became one of the proprietors of Bethlehem Steel Company located adjacent to what is now Phillies Stadium in South Philadelphia. He also served as Mayor from 1865-1868 and again from 1876-1878; however he did not run for re-election due to ill health. In 1892 Messrs Waddell & Son began operating a flour mill on Elk Road which continued operation until deregulation in 1985 caused major bankruptcies throughout much of America including Waddell’s mills near Reading PA In 1933 brickmaking began with an investment by local resident A E Bates Jr., who leased land from Lehigh Valley Railroad Co for a brick factory (the first brick plant west of Pittsburgh) that eventually turned into Bethlehem Steel Company . After years production shifted offshore due to technological advances this resulted in Bethlehem Steel Company going public and filing for bankruptcy protection in 1998 ABM Global plc although still extant as a state limited company with assets valued at $5 billion as at September 30 2016
