The name "Berwick" comes from Old English word "Berwic". The first settler in Berwick was John Butler who arrived in 1784. He named his land after his ancestor, Sir William Butler, 1st Viscount Bute. At the time of its incorporation as a township on June 15, 1825 by act of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, Berwick had a population of about 350 people. In 1828, Captain Nathaniel Philbrick purchased 640 acres (2 km²) east and south of present-day Berwick from George Washington Parke for $1 per acre. By 1840 there were over 1,000 residents living in what is now known as the Borough of Berwick Township and its annexed portions including parts of Bucks County and Montgomery County. In 1847 Captain Philbrick donated an additional 640 acres (2 km²) to form what is now called Park Ridge Township which became an independent borough on February 14th that year by an act passed by the Pennsylvania Legislature; however it merged back into Berwick Township two years later when Park Ridge Borough separated because it had more citizens than did Berwick Township. As early as 1800 Europeans had been trading with Native Americans in present-day Berkshires and Delaware Valley areas; some sources claim that traders may have even landed on what are now Pennsylvanian shores as early as 1694 when Dutchman Hendrick Pauw discovered islands off modern day Delaware Bay while sailing for England under a British flag.. As early settlements grew larger and more established they began to purchase land from Native American tribes or trade them goods such as fish and other seafoods.. In 1784 John Butler settled here with his family after arriving aboard HMS Resolution in 1783 during America's Revolutionary War.. Colonel Francis Marion also made landfall here before embarking upon his famous march through Ohio and Kentucky to drive out Indian resistance· After America's independence was proclaimed on July 4th 1776 Major General Anthony Wayne arrived at this site where he was met with gunfire by Indians occupying Fort Pitt· On September 11th 1800 President Washington ordered Major General James Wilkinson to move all U S troops out of Pittsburgh without giving any specific instructions· Withdrawal complete Santa Anna surrendered this location to U S forces January 9th 1821 after firing 2500 rounds at Fort Pitt only narrowly missing American soldiers inside walls·· For many years this location served as military post for surrounding communities including Northumberland Counties until being decommissioned October 6th 1916·· Today most active use within local community continues with museum located within old fortifications

However, during the mid-19th century economic decline hit Berwicke hard; many businesses closed down and residents lost their jobs. In response to this downturn, many residents decided to move away fromBerwick and form new towns throughout central Pennsylvania. Despite this decline in commerce and population around 1900-2000%, Berwick has continued to be an important community over the years; its economy is based largely on education and research institutions located within its boundaries
