With this change came new opportunities for businesses such as merchants and manufacturers to make money off of sales of binocular products. In 1812, it became a part of Erie County. The town's post office was established in 1824 and continued to be operated until it was discontinued in 1970. The first store on Main Street opened on December 12, 1824 and functioned as an auctioneer's shop until it burned down on July 20, 1830. That year saw also its first religious services with Reverend John Mumford officiating at First Baptist Church on North Main Street. The early residents were farmers who grew corn, beans and other vegetables for local consumption or export to New York City or Philadelphia. By 1840, most of what is now Berwick had been bought by men from Lackawanna County for $1 per acre (in 2006 dollars). With industrial development starting up around that time in nearby Scranton and Wilkes-Barre Township (now Luzerne), there was much competition for jobs and commercial space within Berwick limits which led to some consolidation among some businesses during this period: a millinery store moved from Bradford to downtown Berwick after being forced out of business by another business owner; a bakery moved from Valley Forge to downtown Berworth after zoning restrictions caused it to close its doors because no one wanted to buy its products; while two stores closed due to fire damage – one belonging to Mrs. Cook (a woman who ran both grocery stores) before being rebuilt following insurance money - all these closures left downtownBerwick with just four businesses when World War II started After World War II came prosperity through new technologies like television and refrigeration which led people into increasing numbers towards downtownBerwick where they found more jobs than ever before thanks largely to high school education becoming available here via scholarships administered by various organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce DowntownBerwiches growth continued with suburbanites moving westward into formerly rural areas such as Carbondale/Hershey and Actonville/Allegheny which annexed parts of Berwickshire over time including restaurants like Applebee's that replaced struggling small mom-and-pop businesses along main streets with larger chains; professional sports teams such as the Pittsburgh Steelers (who played their home games at Consol Energy Stadium until 2018) brought many tourists eastward during offseasons bringing economic opportunities for those families while erasing memories about harsh winters back east during football seasons Today many people still refer to themselves as " locals " although there are numerous shops open year round inside DowntownBerwikfte despite statewide efforts by mall developers (eagerly supported by politicians eager for tax breaks)to take away much needed retail space berkeley street has seen multiple restaurant openings lately though i'm not sure if this reflects annexation efforts or simply general trend
