Berwick is a small town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Lackawanna County government. The first settler in Berwick was John Fallick in 1799. In 1819, David Dennison purchased land in what is now Berwick from John Fallick and named it after his father, David Dennison Sr., who had purchased it from Nicholas Pennoyer. The original town plat included four blocks of land east of present-day Main Street and two blocks west of Northumberland Avenue near the Susquehanna River. In 1831, James Rodgers built a sawmill on the Susquehanna River at present-dayowns Main Street and Northumberland Avenue. The mill continued to operate until 1942 when it was destroyed by a fire. A grant from President Andrew Johnson gave rise to the Berwick Township School District in 1865; this district served students through grades K-12 until 1982 when it became coeducational with Shotts Borough School District (now part of Butler Township). In 1892, an addition to Main Street were made for horse racing which continued until 1948 when tracks were moved to nearby Goodyear Park and then abandoned due to vandalism and lack of interest; however they are still visible as concrete foundations along that stretch of road today. In 1915–16 there was a race track located east of US Route 61/US Route 422 on property owned by JF Weir & Sons Coal Mines Co., which closed down due to overcapacity but remains visible as part of what is now known as "The Weir Museum." That same year also saw construction began on what would become berwick's only public school - Dickinson Elementary School - which opened in 1917 despite objections from some residents who felt their children should be taught elsewhere because their parents could not afford the cost; this building still stands today next door to Dickinson Middle School. Berwick has seen many changes throughout its history including becoming an agricultural community during prohibition years followed by growth during World War II as manufacturing took off following the war's end; however most recently growth has slowed although new development continues across main street including apartments, office buildings and a major hospital project currently under way downtown which will bring thousand jobs into town proper
