Berwick, Pennsylvania is a small town in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, located on the Susquehanna River. It was founded by George Washington in 1753 as a trading post on the same site where Fort Cumberland now stands. In 1838, Berwick became the capital of what is now Northumberland County. The first courthouse and jail were built there. Ammunition production began at nearby Mount Vernon Arsenal in 1846, and continued until 1865 when all ammunition production moved to Winchester, Connecticut. The townspeople of Berwick fought for independence from Great Britain during the American Revolution and later were among the most active support groups for the new United States government. In 1917, they voted to incorporate as a borough. Today, Berwick remains an agricultural community with a population of about 2,000 people. Its historically significant industries include ammunition manufacturing and also agriculture (farming) and retail trade (especially along Route 30).

In 1853, when Berwick became a post office under statehood laws, it had a population of just 10 people. By 1870 it had grown to over 100 people and by 1890 it reached 250 people with an addition of 12 schools in that decade alone! The community rapidly developed around its two churches – First Presbyterian Church and Second Presbyterian Church – which both served as central points for social activity and commerce throughout their respective neighborhoods. In 1907 there were only 15 residents in Berwick proper but by 1920 there were more than 300! Berwick experienced some significant growth after World War II when many manufacturing companies moved out to larger towns such as Allentown orPhiladelphia due to wartime shortages in resources such as workers' rights and benefits (the war resulted in highly-skilled labor being available in nearby metropolitan areas). However following the end of World War II many businesses returned to Berwick although some smaller operations ceased production altogether because they could not compete with those located outside of Pennsylvania’s borders].
