Baldwin is a city in and the county seat of Baldwin County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 44,828 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Susquehanna River just east of Philadelphia. The first gun sights were set up in what is now Baldwin County by three men who founded a trading post there in 1795. The first settler to arrive in this area was John Fenton who immigrated from England in 1784. He named his land "Fenton's Purchase" after himself and his brother-in-law James Fenton, a successful trader and colonist in what is now Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The first rifle sights were set up using an old surveyor's map of PA that had been prepared by George Washington as part of his survey of the region for the Potomac Company. These early rifle sights consisted of a small circle on a long stick with aiming points at various distances within rangefinder distance circles that could be moved around to get the perfect shot each time. Rifle sight improvements began with Captured Star Lighthouse built near modern day downtown Baldwin in 1825 which housed two revolving telescope turrets that would allow shooters to aim their rifles onto targets at more than 100 yards away! Sometime before 1830s some farmers decided to build themselves shotguns out back from their homes using crude technology as they did not have access or expertise when it came to gunspowder making so they started manufacturing their own shotgun rounds which required them to go outside and collect saltpeter (a kind of potash) while working on their farmstead which they then used to make pellets for their shotguns! This primitive technology led eventually to firearms manufacturers such as Samuel Colt starting production capabilities back home during the American Civil War because he needed readymade breech loads (bullets) for his repeating rifles!
Baldwin is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,241 at the 2010 census. Baldwin is located on the Susquehanna River and is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settler in Baldwin was John Baldwin who arrived in 1795. He built a log cabin on an island in the river and named it Baldwinsville after himself and his son John Jr. In 1802, he erected a gristmill on Bellefonte creek which became one of the most important mills in central Pennsylvania. In 1814, he added another mill to his holdings on Beaver Dam creek which became known as Baldwin-Beaver Dam Mill. By 1830, he had 8 stores, 4 taverns, 2 churches and 5 schools operating within his boundaries. In 1847 (the year before statehood), Baldwin voted to become a part of what would become Allegheny County; but because of its location on the border between three counties - Butler (north), Armstrong (south) and Westmoreland (east) - he never saw any benefits from this annexation until 1870 when a bridge was completed over the Susquehanna River linking those three counties together. At that time there were only 3 farms in Baldwin; but by 1880 they numbered 107 with an average size of $6 per acre! Today we still see some evidence of early settlement including several large chestnut trees still standing today near downtown! On July 6th 1861 when Andrew Johnson was inaugurated as President of America after being elected Vice President less than two months earlier on April 12th 1860, life for many people changed forever when Booth's Confederate forces invaded through what would later be called "the Kelly flood" entered into central PA from Maryland crossing under Clinton Bridge just south of Altoona giving rise to what has been called one of history's largest acts of treason! This event forever changed not only our community but also attitudes towards slavery that continue to this day! In the early days of gun sights there were many different types and designs. One of the earliest, and most popular, was a crosshair on a Horizontal Axis Sight (HAS). The HAS was very versatile and allowed for different sighting techniques. It was also very easy to use, making it an ideal weapon sight for beginners or those who were not mechanically inclined. The first true gun sights were invented by Captain John Sutter in 1847. He designed a sight that used a platform with two circles that could be seen at various distances from one another. This sight was called the Sutter's Cross or Rifleman's Friend Crosshairs. The later versions of this type of sight consisted of three circles that could be seen at varying distances from one another on an otherwise horizontal axis. These later gunsights became much more common and are still in use today. One of the most famous gun sights is the British Bulldog Mark I Sight which is located on top of a Mauser rifle barrel! This sight dates back to 1908 and can be found on some of the world's most iconic rifles such as the Winchester Model 94, Browning BAR, and NATO Thompson submachineguns.
