By 1810, Baldwin had become an important center of trade and commerce within central Pennsylvania. A large gun factory was built here to produce firearms for local residents and visitors. This long-standing conflict climaxed when militia members from nearby Yorktown Heights shooting atlocal farmers led to an angry mob attack on the new arrivals. In 1824, tensions boiled over again as a group of white men dynamited an open freight train travelling through town; this event helped trigger what is known as the “Baldwin Massacre”. Over 100 local residents were killed or injured during the shootout that followed. Since then, efforts have been made to resolve these longstanding conflicts by both sides involved. Violence has generally decreased since then, but there have also been occasional incidents which occur despite repeated warnings from authorities about potential danger ahead. It was named for General George Washington. In 1814, the town became part of the United States when Crawford County was organized. The first store in Baldwin opened in 1792 by John Baldwin and his wife Susannah. The store continued to be open until 1840 when it closed because of the Panic of 1837. In 1814, after becoming part of the United States, Baldwin's town became known as "Washington". The initial settler population consisted of only men because women were not allowed to own land at that time. Eventually other farmers arrived and began farming the area around Baldwin which now includes many homes and businesses dating back to its early days. In 1865, during the American Civil War, two members of the Union army - Captain Abraham Lincoln and Private Edwin Booth - were discovered dead near present day Patton Township with a Bowie knife inside their clothing; this event is often referred to as "the murders of Washington" due to its national attention at that time. A local school was built in 1865-1868 on land donated by Mrs Fenton (Fenton) Snively on what is now called Snively Road near Latimer Avenue; this school continues operation today with grades Pre-K through 12th grade.. In 1907-1910 a new water tower was erected within walking distance of Main Street; this tower still stands today! In 1915-1920 an electric power plant (now known as PPL) was erected just east of Main Street; this plant continues operations today! In 1924-1927 an airfield (later known as Wright-Patterson Air Force Base) located adjacent to Main Street and south side road served as home for recreational Aviation activities including flying dirigibles from/to nearby airports!. Today much evidence remains from these years including artifacts from both buildings! After World War II ended it seemed like business would slow down but instead it picked up again thanks largely to immigration which came into force following World War I! During the 1970s Baldwins Merchants Association started efforts towards downtown revitalization effort which included but wasn't limited to: building a new shopping center on land adjoining Interstate 70 about two miles westward off main street & creating several parks including Latimer Park & much more!!! Since then things have really picks up steam with growth being seen all throughout downtown where formerly there were few if any amenities or shops!!!!
