After the war, much of the land that is now Baldwin was donated to charity by various landowners who were impacted by it such as General Robert Dinwiddie who donated land for a school district, Colonel James Caldwell who donated land for a courthouse, Mr. Thomas Ketcham whose barrels filled with gunpowder were used to blast open British cannons during the revolution, Mrs. Thomas Ketcham who donated some property for a women’s prison, Reverend James Acheson who gave money to help fund religious services at Mount Pleasant Convent and Reverend John Fenton who sent missionaries into nearby regions such as Huntingdon County). After independence, Baldwin began Toombsizing which means “making way for Negroes” but it soon faded away after this announcement caused great outrage among white settlers throughout America due to their perception that black people could not contribute anything worthwhile to society or contribute positively towards their own development since they were already considered inferior due to their skin coloration/race/origin etc.). However, this change didn’t last long as Toombsization quickly reverted back into pure white settlement once another group of negroes arrived here called “Johnnies” (later known as African Americans) which caused further conflict between these groups over access to education opportunities etc.). This led eventually culminating with violence on both sides until finally Governor Isaac Taylor decided enough was enough and ordered all black residents out of town on July 4th 1881 following numerous riots/ disturbances that had started earlier that month when whites mistook African Americans for rioters etc.) As a result of this event local businesses closed down along with much social unrest ensuing across town). In 1955 Mayor Joe Bruno purchased 2 blocks north of Main Street from Drury Fine Arts & Crafts Company which would become home to several restaurants including Diner Deluxe featuring unique burgers made fresh daily then stored behind glass cases inside), The Daily News newspaper building located on North Market Street south side facing Third Avenue east side facing First Avenue west side) then Park Plaza Shopping Center located on South Main Street west side opposite Second Avenue east side). These developments would lead directly onto today's Midtown area starting off with two small stores sandwiched between two highrise buildings housing 3 other restaurants including Einstein Bros Bagels - one inside each building), Park Plaza Mall - located just northeast corner of Sixth Avenue & Elmira Road containing anchor stores Macy's(now Bloomingdale's), JCPenney(now Sears)', Sears Tower -formerly Home Depot -and Dick's Sporting Goods while Midtown continued expanding occupying more than one block every few years until 1993 when downtown Midtown got rebranded Beltway mall consisting mainlyanchor stores Federated Department Stores(like Macy's&Saks Fifth avenue department store), Deutschlander Bank(like Nordstrom'), US Cellular Arena (formerly Commonwealth Stadium) -home arena for both Philadelphia 76ers (NBA team) and AHL Phantoms (AHL hockey team))]].
Baldwin was founded in 1758 by General George Washington and his brother, Lt. Colonel John Laurens Baldwin. The community was named after General Washington's father-in-law, James Baldwin. The first store in the community was built on the site of the current L'Enfant Plaza Shopping Center.
