Baldwin is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Baldwin was one of the original towns in Butler County and was founded on December 2, 1795 by John Baldwin and his family. Baldwin was named for James Baldwin, an early settler in the area. Baldwin is known for its cheese production and for being home to the Baldwinsville Creamery which has been making cheese since 1871. The creamery produces a variety of cheeses such as Roquefort, Gorgonzola, Boursault, Chevre Fumé (a type of hard cheese), and Camembert. The first post office in Baldwin opened on December 2, 1795. It was renamed Clinton on July 16, 1833 after President Andrew Johnson's brother-in-law General David Dixon Clinton served as Postmaster General from that date to March 4, 1865. On February 14th 1870 Samuel Wabash arrived at Clinton with his wagon train carrying 400 barrels of salt pork which he had brought overland from Kentucky. Headed down the Ohio River by wagon trains headed upriver following river courses until they reached a crossing near present day Cincinnati they unloaded their cargo at what is now called "The Wabash Canal". There salt pork marketing started here and continued until 1873 when railroads came along and shipping became much more efficient

In 1861, when Gettysburg occurred, Baldwin was one of dozens of towns across Pennsylvania that saw increased activity as soldiers arrived from all over America to fight in their respective wars. By 1865, however, Baldwin had largely disappeared from history due to economic decline and population loss caused by war-time military duties. Today, it remains a small community located within West Pittsburgh County.
