The area that is now Baldwin was once part of Clearfield Township which included parts of Butler, Lebanon, and Pittsburgh counties. The original village on the site where today's Baldwin sits was founded in 1788 by John White and others as a result of land grants from British King George III. In 1800, John White sold his holdings to James McGill who renamed them Baldwin Village after himself. At one time or another, both villages had a school and store but these were all discontinued by 1920 when Allegheny County built its own school system for the community.
