The Welsh immigrants who arrived in 1792 were Ffraini Bryn ap Ieuan (born c1753), Rhys Davies (1760-1836), Glynn ap Gwilym (1765-1827) and John Davies (1773-1858). They brought their livestock, crops, tools, cloths and other goods with them when they came to America. The first permanent settlers were Isaac Pugh (1696-1764) and his wife Mary(?–1775). Other early settlers include James Frazer(c1735-1800), Richard Burt(c1800-1820) and Joseph Priestly(? – 1802). After arriving in America, many of these Welsh immigrants married native Americans or English women from neighboring towns or villages. In 1793, Captain Richard Harding sailed from Swansea Bay with 174 passengers on board the ship "Essex". He reached Philadelphia on November 15th after making three trips across the Atlantic Ocean. At that time, Philadelphia had not yet been incorporated as a municipality! Captain Harding's group built two wooden huts at what is now Southwark Park on Market Street between Walnut Street and Broad Streets. They called their settlement "Pennyroyal" because one penny earned each day went towards building materials necessary for their new home. Captain Harding's Landing would eventually become known as Baldwin due to Captains John Andros and Jonathan Dunham who landed there in 1800 while exploring western Pennsylvania looking for grants of land to settle . As this map shows you can see There Were Many Grants given out From This Location But Only Some Settlers Got To Live Here……... On December 1st 1800 Another Grant Was Given Out To George Washington By Captain Hardship Which Wrote “We Have Paid Our Toll”…. However Nothing Happened With These Grants Because Of Provincial Politics Most of what we know about Baldwin comes from newspapers published between 1825 and 1850 - especially those written by attorney General William Henry Harrison who served as President Andrew Johnson's Vice President from 1889 to 1893. During these years, much action took place within the government concerning local issues including court cases involving property titles; relocations of businesses; voter registration; labor legislation; land purchases; agricultural production; etc.. Harrison was born in Hamburg Township near Pittsburgh in 1784 he came overland via Canada with his family when he was just nine years old father died soon after arrival which left mother Sarah struggling financially along side 5 children under 10 years old which included 4 boys – all siblings ran away so she could find work but 2nd oldest brother stayed behind graduated high school then started rock business life taking care of parents finances $5 per week wages then customers got 3 cents change back then no machine so had to give it away free … read more
