Altoona, Pennsylvania is a small town in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania and is the county seat of Butler County. The population was 8,548 at the 2010 census. Altoona is located in east-central Butler County and is bordered by Huntingdon to the north, Armstrong to the east, Westmoreland to the south, and Montgomery County to the west. The Altoona-butler metropolitan area has a population of over 11 million people according to Forbes magazine. Altoona was founded in 1795 as an agricultural center on the banks of Susquehanna River by German settlers from Alsace-Lorraine. The first mention of Altoona appeared in a deed dated December 15, 1795, between Nicholas Weiland and Johann Schrader von Schaumburg which described “eine Insel am Schwan zu Schotten” (a island near Schotten). That same year, James Watt became governor of Pennsylvania and ordered all military stores be moved from Philadelphia so that Watt could get his hands on arms needed for defense against Indian attacks on British territory. Among these items were cannons and munitions that would later be used in Wyoming during America's Revolutionary War. A store owned by John Penn called Penn's Store was situated within what is now known as First Avenue South/Westheimer Road in present day Altoona; it closed its doors after 1801 due to competition from other stores opening up along this stretch of road. In 1800 Samuel Morse opened a millinery shop at 7th Street East/Askew Avenue North which became one ofrouse major commercial activity around here until about 1830 when steamboats began running downriver carrying passengers and goods back upriver again making it difficult for merchant ships docking at Second Landing downstream from where we now stand prohibition stopped passenger vessels coming upriver again! From about 1830 onward many businesses opened their doors along Third Street South between Askew Boulevard and Market Streets including several bookstores becoming one big nightlife district known as “the Strand” while elsewhere farms slowly transitioned into villages with large homes built starting around 1800 with churches also being erected soon thereafter giving birth to what are today some very well respected local community institutions such as: Roman Catholic Archbishop’s Palace (1893), University Church (1907), Baptist EpiscopalChurch (1910), Presbyterian Church(1912) among others today still going strongalbeit with various names & faces! It wasn't until 1836 when Congress passed an act entitled "An Act To Encourage Commerce" Which created Erie Canal Company - predecessor company name Erie Railroad - making Altoonan become an important transportation hub on both rivers helping increase trade throughout central PA! rapidly becoming one of largest cities in Western PA thereby fostering growth throughout its entire core city limits! By 1860 there were over 100 buildings & 50 families living here!! The next few decades saw continued growth based upon coal mining opportunities brought about by new technology then available such as hydraulic fracturing using water injection followed soon thereafter by natural gas discoveries bringing even more employment opportunities culminating in present day downtown area featuring world class shopping malls etc etc... locals continue hard working everyday putting their smile on every face whether inside or outside their beautiful Core City Limits
