As of the 2010 census, Altoona had a population of 497 residents. The name "Altoona" was first given to it by General James Wilkinson during his 1795 Expedition through what is now Allegheny County. In 1824, John Dupleix gave the settlement its current name - Altoona being one word for both "a white person" and "a town on the Susquehanna". He named the area that includes present day Altoona after then British Lieutenant Colonel George Washington's favorite spot in Scotland - an ifreet called Alford Moor. At first glance, it may appear as though this naming decision was simply whimsy on Wilkinson's part; however, upon further inspection it would seem he may have had some realestate reasons behind his choice - Alford Moor lay just outside Philadelphia at that time and its location made it prime real estate territory for those rich enough to afford such advantages! Although no evidence exists to support this claim, legend has it that General Washington himself visited Alford Moor several times during his military campaigns throughout America! Altoona is a small town in the Susquehanna Valley of Pennsylvania, United States. Altoona was first settled in 1755 byammers and their families. The area became an important center for coal mining and manufacturing during the 19th century; it is now a bedroom community with a population of around 23,000. The townsite at what is now Altoona was named for Peter Altoon, one of the early pioneers of the Susquehanna Valley. In 1756, John Cranch laid out a grant to three men—John Denny, James Craig and George Washington—for 99 acres (40 ha) on which they erected two houses and began to cultivate land. They named their grant "Altoona" after Lieutenant Colonel George Washington's father-in-law (and future President). In 1824, General William Taney granted 1,024 acres (500 ha) to Abraham Baldwin for his Alma mines; this land later became part of Altoona Township. In 1827, Samuel Colt purchased 2 square miles (4 km²) east of present-day Altoona from Baldwin for $1 million dollars. From this purchase came Colt'ssteel company and other businesses that helped make Altoona one of the leading industrial cities in America during the late 19th century. The roots of modern day aluminum production can be traced back to 1911 when Alcoa Inc., then part of American Smelting & Refining Company founded its aluminum smelter at what is now Alcoa Place in Altoona. That year, steelmaker Bethlehem Steel Corporation established an aluminum plant on State Street adjacent to Bethlehem SteelWorks Associates Inc., which operated as a separate subsidiary until 1971 when it merged with Alcoa plc.. During World War II service members were among the largest single sources of workforce growth in Altoona; 400 men were employed at Alcoa Place while production increased by 50%. After the war ended there was rapid job growth as new industries such as information technology took hold: over 60 employees worked at Alcoa Place when it merged with American National Laboratory in 1987 to form Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory - home today to world’s most advanced nuclear weapons research program!
