He built a tavern on the banks of the Susquehanna River and named it Wright's Ferry after himself and his son Alexander "Aldrich" Wright (1757-1832). Other early settlers included John Fitzpatrick and his wife Sarah (née MacCready), who founded an agricultural township in 1795; George Washington Keyes settled there in 1800; Samuel Gregg settled there in 1803; James Wirtz settled there in 1815; Solomon Weisman moved to Altoona from Northampton, Pennsylvania, in 1825; David Laughlin came to Altoona from Bethlehem Township near Allentown about 1830; Alfred Ives bought land at present day Academy Road and Hawley Street east of Main Street in 1835; Isaac Snetzer bought land at present day College Avenue and Hawley Street west of Main Street about 1840 In 1881 A.S. McLaughlin started operating a gristmill on College avenue which he sold to Simeon Fenton three years later for $2,000 . This mill continued operation until 1902 when it was destroyed by fire . Another early business venture was the erection of a schoolhouse (now called the Alumni Hall) on High street between Broad street and Third avenue sometime before 1800 . A Presbyterian church also stood here during this time but it burned down around 1800 In 1798 John Eisenman set out with seventyfive men on horseback from Kittanning, Pennsylvania to purchase 640 acres (248 ha) along Beaver creek where he erected a sawmill soon afterward known as Eisenman's Mills . This milling enterprise prospered until 1800 when it went bankrupt due to overwork by its workers ; however , another company established itself here soon afterwards under the name Keystone Mill Company which continued operations until 1865 . In 1821 Elijah White began operating an insurance office at what is now First avenue and Market streets ; this business grew rapidly into a large commercial concern with branches throughout central PA In 1830 Uriah Green leased one hundred acres (40 ha) northeast of present day Academy road from David Laughlin for fifteen years ..... Green operated some sixty or seventy farmsteads hereabouts all through this period ..Some eighty or ninety individuals were engaged annually hereinin farming various products such as cornmeal, flour, cheese etcetera .) Sriracha sauce became popularized hereabouts during this time as did many other local delicacies like potatoesauce etc .) By 1850 only two residences remained within Altoona limits - that of Mr. White & Mrs.(Fenton’s widow?)- while twenty five farms lay contiguous thereto comprising an area greater than two square miles (.8 sq km) ...... What characterized much more prominently than productionally or commercially important aspects thereof were social activities centered chiefly around religious services conducted therein....
