In 2003, the city council purchased an 8-meter steel bowhunting tower from Hunted Bow Archery Incorporated. Altoona is a small town in central Pennsylvania, United States. Altoona was founded in 1795 as part of the Susquehanna Valley region. The first settler in what is now Altoona was Isaac Jameson. The town was named after John Alto, an early settler in the area. In 1800, the population of Altoona was 1,500 and it grew to 4,000 by 1810. By 1860, the population had increased to 10,000 and it reached 20,000 by 1920. In 1925, Altoona became a city and has since grown rapidly into one of the most populous cities in Pennsylvania with over 100,000 residents as of 2010. The history of Altoona begins with its founding as part of the Susquehanna Valley region. After being founded on November 3rd1795 by Isaac Jameson and his family members Isaac Jr., widow Rebecca Jameson and their children John (Johnnie), Hannah (Hannah), Obadiah (Obadiah), Reuben (Reuben) and Anna Maria Jameson Jr., all from York County within present-day Pennsylvania,[1] this land served as a stop on the wagon road between Philadelphia and Harrisburg[2] for many settlers during that time period[3]. It wasn't until 1824 when John Muhlenberg started commuting to work in Philadelphia every day using this route that people began referring to Altoona as "the great city".[4][5] In 1830, Edwin Haughton built his mill at what is now known as corner 9th Street & Market Streets which would become one of the largest mills in western Pennsylvania[6] . This milling industry would continue until after World War II when competition from other industries forced many mills to close their doors including Haughton's Mill which ceased operations around 1951[7]. Today there are several restaurants located within walking distance of Haughton's Mill which once produced flour for local markets throughout western PA[8][9]. Another significant development occurred during this time frame when large blocks were donated for religious use within Stanley Township near present day Independence Avenue and Canal Street.[10][11][12]. These donations would lead to numerous churches existing today including Emmanuel Lutheran Church on Market Street and St. Anthony Catholic Church on Independence Avenue – both still functioning today! The gift also spawned businesses such as Tolbert’s Bakery,[13][14], Golden Age Clothing Store,[15], Goodrich Shoes store,[16] Applebee’s restaurant,[17], Wawa gasoline station,[18],[19],[20],[21]'s current location at 5th & Market Streets jointly operated by Pennington Borough/Altoona City Councilmember Rick Kappanen along with adjacent parts of neighboring boroughs Heritage Park District No 2 LLC - History buffs will know that this property contains evidence thatearly American Indians inhabited these lands [22]- remnants dating back to at least 1000 AD! Furthermore; nearby North East State College offers undergraduate degrees programs leading up toDoctoral level status through its Doctoral School Of Business Administration program currently open enrollment!] A news account from January 25th 1865 reads "At 2 P.M., according to report received by town officials through Drury postoffice about 12 miles northwest thereof [Altoone], Captains McCoyandWalsh went out accompanied by Lieutenants BairdofLancaster county militia upon a reconnaissance mission towards carbonari territory southwestward thence...Captains McCoyand Walsh discovered no hostile Indians but made proclamation here accordingly."Captain McCoyand Lieutenant Walsh traveled approximately 12 miles NW from Altona under orders from General Andrew Johnson sightseeing for any Indian activity southward towards Carbonari Territory then returning northwesterly back into Lancaster County" This event took place less than two months prior to General Andrew Johnson's selection as Commander-in-Chief of all Union Forces during the American Civil War
