The first settler in present-day Altoona was Nicholas Sahlgren, who arrived from Sweden on October 2, 1754. He named his settlement after Johannes betahelius (Johannes Bezalel) Bachmann, an early German trader and explorer who had visited the area earlier that year. In 1814, Augustus Saint Clair founded the second largest city in America at Pittsburgh and moved his operations here to avoid competition from Philadelphia's growing population. In 1828, John Cavanaugh erected a sawmill here that became one of the leading mills on the Susquehanna River Valley during this time period; it still operates today as Crescent Mills LLP. After years of decline brought on by technological advances such as steamboats and railways until they superseded sailing vessels several miles downstream along the river during World War II (the war's "Great American Famine"), Altoona began to experience growth following World War II thanks to development around its military munitions plant and other businesses associated with it such as food processing and engineering companies. In 1972-1973, when then-President Nixon visited Altoona for an arms control conference; he toured both plants before speaking at their dedication ceremonies just two weeks later—a tour that helped establish them as symbols of postwar American industrialization throughout much of Eastern Pennsylvania. Altoona was founded in 1760 by James Wood and his brother John. The town developed around the woodstock brewery, which operated until 1847. In 1876, Altoona became a city.
