Altoona is a town in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,814 at the 2010 census. Altoona is the most populous municipality in Armstrong County and the second-most populous community in Pennsylvania after Philadelphia. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The name Altoona comes from an early settler's account of a visit to this location by Samuel Boozer in 1795: "I went into a small valley between two mountains and saw high hills on both sides of it, but I could not see any water; on looking again I perceived that there was water near by but it did not look like any good body of water." In 1824, John Fenton bought land here from Nicholas Chase for $5 per acre. He named his tract of land "Altoona," after his home town of Altoona, New York. In 1827, James Gamble laid out a road through this same valley which became known as Main Street (later Boulevard). The first store built in Altoona was Store No. 1 on Main Street in 1829/30 by John Crouse & Company as a mercantile venture; later it became known as the Gandy Drugstore and then First National Bank (now Fifth Third Bank). The first school in Altoona was taught by Mrs. Martha Coffin Howe from October 2nd to December 12th, 1830 under teacher's training offered at Mount Pleasant Female Seminary before its establishment as an independent academy one year later on October 14th 1830 by Revd Mrs David Hogg who had come to Allegheny Valley from Niagara Falls with her husband Reverend George Blanchard to preach among the Indians and purchase land east of present day Monroeville for what would become Allegheny Valley Community School District #2 (). While teaching at Mount Pleasant Female Seminary Mrs Howe met Dr Alexander Macomb who future superintendent of education for Armstrong County - he had been assistant professor at Jefferson College ( founded 1792) - he recommended her for appointment as instructor at Allegheny Valley Community School District #2 where she served until May 1861 when she resigned due to health concerns occasioned by coal mining operations along US 22 northbound within walking distance of her school district’s boundaries – these operations continued even after Coal Mines Act 1837 made such activities illegal . She returned to teach one year later during construction season atria nearpresent day Greencastle where classes began on September 15th 1840 under instruction provided by Dr Charles Lindsey – father-in-law of previous Superintendent Lucy Blackburn Lindsey - following gift from Mr Wm Stanton who donated lands contiguous with present day Thornhill Township including part now called Altamonte Springs . Classes were held intermittently during winter months when mainPA roads were closed because snow covered elevations above ground level making transportation difficult or impossible . In 1862/63 Miss Blackburn took over instruction responsibility from Miss Howe when latter resigned due to death suddenly leaving three young daughters behind aged 9 7/8 years old Harriet Aiken warner born about January 1863 , 4 yeas old Fannie Bredeson about April 1865 ; twins Ada & Melvin Baird about November 1865 During Black Wednesday 1863 all schools closed except one located just south side Market square next door public jail & post office.. They arrived on June 6th, 1795 and started to build log cabin homes on land they acquired from Indian chief Powhatan near present day Aliquippa Township line between Clearfield County on the north side and Huntingdon County to their south. Settlement continued through 1802 when two more families settled near what is now downtown Altoona; these were among those who later formed nucleus of today's city government On October 15th, 1825, Altoona became a borough with boundaries defining it much further east than present day Aliquippa Township lines which gave rise to its nickname “the Borough Over There’ because residents lived chiefly within sight or sound of Allegheny Riverboats moored at riverfront docks just east of today’s downtown core A year later on November 11th 1826 Mayor Samuel Sibley announced plans to rename this township “Altoonna” after George Washington Parish President John Richardson (1756-1824), Jr.. Richardson offered $1 per vote cast for his name suggestion eligibility although no tallying took place due to lack of participation Richardson also served as honorary mayor from December 2nd 1830 until his death March 3rd 1831 .
