Altoona is a town in Carbon County, Pennsylvania, United States. Altoona is the seat of Carbon County and has a population of 362 as of the 2010 census. The name Altoona was given to the community by General John Forbes during the American Revolutionary War. The community was founded on December 12, 1791, by James Armstrong and his group of surveyors who were mapping the area for a new line between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The first store in Altoona opened its doors on Main Street in 1812. In 1838, John Pemberton donated land to create what is now Main Street Park in honor of his wife Susannah Pemberton (née Armstrong). On November 3, 1888, Altoona was incorporated as a borough. In 1935 it became an official city after being designated by Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt as part of the New Deal Regional Development Program. In 1978 Altoona Mayor Milton Siegel successfully lobbied for annexation into neighboring Scranton because he felt that Scranton's economy had been unfairly suppressed within Carbon County since its establishment as an independent municipality in 1924. The annexation granted Scranton authority to levy its own tax rate and make all local spending subject to state government control; this led to increased economic development around Altoona and helped spur much-needed job growth in areas such as transportation and technology which have continued into the present day. It is safe to say that the way firearms sights work has a long and varied history. Early firearms were designed with close range combat in mind, so it was not until the late 18th century that sights began to be developed for higher power rifles. The first true sighting devices consisted of a crosshair or aiming point on top of a wooden or metal arm, which could be depressed to bring the gun down to within 100 yards of its target. The development of rifleguns necessitated the introduction of more sophisticated sight devices. The earliest example is known as an open sights device, which allowed the shooter to see both front and back sides of their target at once by moving the aim post forward or backward. Open sights became common on modern rifles during World War II because they allowed greater accuracy with longer ranges. Today, many shooters still use open sights when engaging targets much beyond 100 yards however, modern rifles have also been designed with what are called "closed" sighting systems, which allow only certain portions of the target (e.g., front and rear) to be seen at once while keeping other sections hidden from view. Altoona, Pennsylvania is a small town located in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania. The population was 6,747 at the 2010 census. Altoona is one of the oldest communities in this area and has been mentioned as early as 1776. The town was founded by German immigrants and was named for the Altoona Gap near Mount Weather on the Susquehanna River. The first settlers to Altoona were Heinrich Wilhelm Rohrbaugh and his wife Anna Maria Rohrbaugh. They arrived in 1777, and soon started trading goods with other farmers in nearby Bethlehem and Lancaster County. In 1778, they built a sawmill on the banks of the river. There were also several gristmills operated by Germans throughout this time period; these millstones mark the beginnings of what would become Altoona’s downtown district. In 1802, John Fetterman bought some land from Heinrich Rohrbaugh and began development of what would become Fetterman Square. This area became known as “the heart of Altoona” due to its prominence in local commerce and culture during this time period. In 1806, he donated an acreage to serve as a public square which remains today one of its most important features. During World War II, many factories were located in Altoona during wartime production such as Rolls-Royce Motorschmidt & Co., Motorola ( subsequent Avionic division), Canwest Radio Corporation (later CW Communications) – all located near Fetterman Square between 1945-1948; it was here that General Electric created their jet engine plant (GE Aviation). DTX Television Corporation had their headquarters here from 1951 until 1982 when they moved downriver to White Sands Missile Range (WSMR). Today DTX television still operates out of their old building at 5th Avenue South & Market Street which is now called "DTX TV Tower." It also used to be home to WMMR's radio station WDVE who vacated their building back in 1984 after having signed on as an FM station playing pop music only instead of fulltime adult contemporary format like today's WMMR does!
Altoona was founded in 1795 by a group of Pennsylvania Germans who came to the area to mine coal. The community grew rapidly, and in 1803 it became a borough. In 1867, Altoona became the capital of the new Pennsylvania statehood. The city has continued to grow since then, becoming one of the most populous in Pennsylvania.
