In 1948, when Allegheny County was divided into two parts - Western Allegheny County and Pittsburgh-area eastern counties - Altoona became one of the original townships in western Allegheny County. It remained so until 1974 when it was abolished along with all other township-level governmental units within Allegheny County under then-Governor Edward M.] Brown's Executive Order No. 9789; however, it continued to be Recognized by Official Laws as a Borough withinPittsburgh-area eastern county for all purposes except for tax assessment purposes which are done pursuant to code §34‑7603 et seq.. On December 2nd, 1984 elements from both boroughs merged into one consolidated government unit called "Altooni". Since 2007 there has been debate over whether or not Altoona should have an elected mayor/manager or if services such as education and cultural events should instead be handled through an appointed structure similar to those found throughout much larger municipalities like Pittsburgh where citizens vote on matters related to their municipality directly... Altogether there are over 100 active organizations scattered throughout different sectors that make up our vibrant community including many churches ( denominations), chamber of commerce (with more than 150 members), library system (over 115 branches), several professional sports teams (the Steelers football team being particularly notable), schools including 6 elementary schools (grades PreK thru 3rd grade) plus 4 high schools(grades 4th thru 12th grade). Over 50% self employed families making home made goods or selling items online etc...
