He founded an ironworks which became one of the largest in America and manufactured cannons for both American and British military use. In 1824, west of Altoona on Route 10 were laid out two new towns: Allentown and Easton. These towns soon followed suit with their own schools (Allentown had a high school by 1829) but they all shared a single courthouse until 1840 when Easton built its own brick courthouse which remains standing to this day. The Panic of 1893 struck hardest Altoona residents as prices for farm goods plunged 50% overnight due to low demand from Europe following World War I. The effects lingered into the next decade as farmers lost their jobs and unable to replace destroyed equipment or borrow money from friends or family members they’d left behind, businesses closed, streets wereClogged with empty cans,and Altona lagged far behind other communities in terms of economic development." Altoona, Pennsylvania is a small town located in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. It was founded in 1795 by John Altoona and his family. The Altoona Area School District was established in 1925 and serves the community of Altoona and its surrounding townships. The population of Altoona was estimated to be 10,000 people as of 2010. The first Europeans to visit what is now Altoona were the Frenchmen Perrot and Laforet on September 24, 1684. They were looking for a route to India when they stopped at the confluence of the Susquehanna River and Allegheny River. Captain James Irvine charted the area that includes today's Altoona on November 2, 1746 while he was exploring Upper Canada with General George Washington’s army during the French and Indian War. Francis Lightfoot built a trading post at present-day Geary Street near North Main Street in 1775 while he was Surveyor-General for British colonial America. He named it Fort Christina after Queen Christina of Sweden who visited him there in 1774. In 1802, Andrew Mellon bought 1/4 acre (0.24 hectare) of land from David Baird on which he built a log cabin known as "Mellon House". Mellon eventually became one of America's richest men through his investments in coal mining companies and banks. In 1892, Mellon donated $10 million to establish Carnegie Hall which replaced Mellon House asthe home of Pittsburgh's only Carnegie Library consortium affiliate until 1997 when it opened at 1501 South Scranton Ave., also called Carnegie Hall Center for Arts & Cultural Development). In 1907, Mellon donated $5 million toward construction of PPL Park (later renamed Penn State University Park) across from Trenton High School where students now play baseball or football before attending classes inside the 8-acre (3-hectare) parkland developed by banker Milton Friedman between 1927 and 1932 adjacent to PPL Plaza shopping center then anchored by Jiffy Lube Garage then Sears Tower Research & Development building now occupied by Iberia Airlines). In 1924, Drury Township formed out of parts of York County following an act passed by Congress entitled "An Act To Promote Agriculture Amongst Our People" which provided funds for local farmers to purchase land eastward along West Branch Susquehanna River from Lebanon Township so that they could grow crops there instead of being forced into markets far away like those near Philadelphia where prices were too high for their produce; this allowed farmers closer access to consumers who could afford cheaper prices thanks partly to World War II rationing programs that limited exports from countries such as Germany due to its production capabilities within short order). On December 21st Of That Year Local Board Of Education Passed An ordinance Approving A New School District Named "Drury Township High School", Which Was Sure To Cause Confusion And Stir Up Trouble As There Had been No Such Thing As A 'Drury' Before!... Although Some Farmer's Were Upset Over This Big Change Because They felt Their Neighborhood Would Be Described As 'Old Drury'. A new school had finally been created after years spent searching vainly for one that would meet all children's needs including adult education courses needed by many working adults; this district became known as "Altoona Area Schools" because it served most residents within three municipalities - Altoonna township; Clearfield borough; Ridleywood borough - plus some residents within Mercer county located beyond Municipality boundaries just northwest corner Of Steeles Avenue & US 12W [now partof Middletown Borough] until 1975 when that municipality boundaries changed creating separate schools districts: Alpoonea Area Schools District #1 encompasses all residents within Municipality borders including portions extendinng into Mercer county; Altomontana Borough School District #2 includes all residents within Borough borders but extends easterly into Clearfield borough; Drury Township High School District #3 includes all residents within Township boundaries except portions extending easterly into Mercer county.) Citizens approved incorporation of their own government on November 5th 1836 with William Crouse elected President with Alderman James Gorman Vice President
