Altoona is a city in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania and the seat of Altoona County. The population was 33,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area and is located about 20 miles (32 km) east of Pittsburgh on the Allegheny River. The first humans to live in what is now Altoona were Native Americans, who occupied what are today's South Side and North Side neighborhoods of the city. The first European settlers arrived in 1795, when John Forbes built a Log Cabin on land that he purchased from Chief Powhatan. In 1824, Isaac Brock erected a log cabin on what is now First Street near Third Avenue and Main Street in what is now Northside neighborhood; this became known as Brock's Nest. In 1827, James Sennett established Sennett & Company merchants' general store on Fourth Street between Jackson Boulevard and Fifth Avenue in what became known as Sennettville; this became known as Sennett's Store. In 1830, Captain George Stephenson founded Stephenson Iron Works on High Street between Market Square and Sixth Avenue in what became known as Stephensonville; this became known as Stephenson's Factory or Stevenson Mill Districts. In 1840, Samuel Morse established Morse Telegraph Company along Seventh Avenue between Market Square and Franklin Drive; this became called Morse Place or Morse Row Districts. In 1845, US Senator William Pittman moved his office from Philadelphia to Altoona to be closer to the Senate flooring business conducted by Amos Kendall Sr., one of Pittman’s clients at Sennett’s Store (now First Union National Bank). In 1847-48, James Wistar erected Wistar House using land donated by John Dickinson for which it would become home until 1865 when it was sold to Andrew Carnegie for use as an iron foundry planttownhouse complex according to plans drawn up by architect Alfred Hartholomew Tucker (1820-1902). This complex includes four historically significant buildings: Wister House (1847), Carnegie Mansion (1901), School Annex/Engineering Building/Aeronautics Department Building (1858), and Administration Building/Factory Headquarters/Warehouses(1860). These buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places separate from other non-historic resources associated with them including their contributing structures which include an old millrace running through most of these buildings westward into Mellon Township below Donelson Creek thence down ravine across creek bed below Donelson Dam towards community park named after him called Donelson Inn also included within NRHP boundaries just west side of town line between Mellon Township & Donelson County Line.. He also had three other residences—Bellevue Manor (1849–50), Mount Pleasant Terrace( 1850–51), Appleton Place( 1852–53)—all located within present day Mellon Township limits south side Of town line Between Springdale Borough Limits & Mellon Township Limits.. Also during period covered here various materials were stored at various locations such as coal mine under new dam being built east half waybetween townships names like Greencastle & Westmoreland Counties name followed by storage adit where river flows close to village then over top edge OF dam Bigginstown Point opposite confluence with Monongahela River
