Altoona is situated on the Susquehanna River and is bordered by Armstrong County to the east and northeast, Clearfield Township to the north, Whitehall Township to the west, and Monaca Borough to the south. The first European settlers in Altoona were Germans who established a trading post in 1795. The first store was built on what is now Main Street in 1805 by John Schmidt. A sawmill started operation in 1828 and continued until 1870. A gristmill operated from 1834 to 1865; it was replaced by a power turbine mill that began operating in 1957. In 1892, Congress passed an act authorizing construction of a canal across the Susquehanna River for transportation purposes between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh (the "Canal Act"). Construction began on November 1st of that year but was stopped due to lack of money; however, work recommenced two months later under more auspices after federal stimulus legislation became law. The canal opened on December 3rd 1863; however, only 16% of its total length had been completed when it merged with another canal into one large structure known as "The Erie Canal." Altoona began becoming significant as an agricultural center during World War II because of its production of food items such as breadfruit (a type of fruit), soybeans, cornmeal (a type of cereal), eggs, butter and cheese products. In 1941-1942 local war efforts resulted in 1120 acres (500 hectares) being cultivated for Victory Garden production which consumed up to 60% of all food produced within Armstrong County during those years. After 1945 many small businesses closed down due to declines in manufacturing activity throughout Pennsylvanian industrial towns/cities during this time period; however Altoona's vibrant business community has bounced back since then with several new restaurants opening up over the past few years alone!
