Allentown is a city in southern Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Lackawanna County, and the second-largest city in western Pennsylvania after Pittsburgh. Allentown is located on the Allegheny River, about 20 miles (32 km) west of Pittsburgh and 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Erie. The first settlers to what is now Allentown were Quakers who arrived from Northampton County, Massachusetts in 1758. They organized a town meeting on April 16, 1763 to choose a location for their new community and select an official name for it – "Allegany". On November 11, 1768, they voted to change its name to "Allentown" after Colonel John Forbes alluding to their close proximity to the then-northern colony of New York City. The original town site lay within present-day South Side Township but was annexed by Easton in 1836 following its incorporation as a borough; Allentown became a municipality on December 5 of that year. In 1892, AllentownResidents raised $500 to build an electric street railway called the Anthracite Extension which connected downtown with anthracite coal mines around milepost 9 near today's Second Street and Park Avenue West Streets. This line opened September 1st 1892 and provided passenger service until May 29th 1966 when it was replaced by the Penn Central Railroad's Main Line between Scranton PA and Bridgeport CT which continued passenger service until 1979 when it was supplanted by Amtrak's Keystone Corridor service along Interstate 80 south from Harrisburg PA until 1995 when passenger service ended due to budget cuts statewide. The Anthracite Extension electrified four blocks of 2nd Street from Park Avenue West Streets eastward from where it crossed Second Street near today’s intersection with Third Street NW - this area remains un electrified today despite multiple proposals over many years for various electrical upgrades including one included on Mayor Mike McGraw’s 2014 AM Agenda item “Electricity forALLENTOWN!” The streetcars ran every few minutes during morning rush hours until 1976 when they were discontinued because of low ridership rates which has been attributed mostly toressoraphical changes made at Penn Central Railway Station including new platforms that eliminated much walking between stations making access more difficult than it used to be & also improved connecting facilities at both stations making it much easier for passengers accessing all servicesrather than havingto walk several blocks + transfer buses or take public transportation

Despite this setback during its history, Allentown has made significant progress since the late 20th century becoming an major educational center for eastern Lehigh County while also continuing to maintain a strong commercial presence including several large corporations such as Bethlehem Steel Company, Lucent Technologies Inc., American Electric Power Company (AEP), Comcast Corporation (Xfinity), Wells Fargo & Co., Monsanto Co., PPG Industries Inc., Allegheny Energy Company (AEP) - among many others- making it one of eastern Pennsylvania's most vibrant communities today.
