Allentown is a city in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 11,405 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Lehigh County after Bethlehem. They built a log cabin on land that today forms part of South Street between Third and Fourth Streets. The area around this cabin became known as "the geographical center of America." In 1827, William Penn founded the College of Philadelphia (now Temple) in neighboring Reading with some students from Allentown. This connection to Philadelphia helped make Allentown an important community for education and business development beginning in the 19th century. In 1849, John Dennison started a sawmill on Mill Creek near present-day Northampton Avenue and Second Street; this mill would become one of the largest employers in town until it closed its doors in 1916. Dennison also founded two other businesses: One operated as a general store, which became known as Dennison's Depot; and another ran a small grocery called "The Smith House" on Market Street between First and Second Streets which still stands today (it opened for business on October 7, 1854). Allentown experienced rapid growth during the early 20th century due to its importance as an agricultural center due to its natural resources such as coal, lumber, rice fields, potatoes etc., along with its location within easy reach of major markets throughout Pennsylvania and New York City.
