Allentown is a city in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 33,715 at the 2010 census. Allentown was founded as an agricultural village in 1797 by William Allin and others. It became an incorporated town in 1854. The current City of Allentown was established in 1903 when the annexed villages of Northampton and Reading were combined into the new town. In 1863, Allentown became the first municipality in Pennsylvania to issue its own currency - $1 worth of local paper bills called "pennies." Allentown has a rich rifle and shotgun history dating back to colonial times when it served as a military outpost and center for trade with New York City. The early 19th century saw rapid growth within the community due to its strategic location on the Lehigh River between Philadelphia and Readington, NJ. John Brown's raid on Monmouth Junction in 1859 led to American Civil War service here as part of General Robert Ewell's 3rd Corps under General Ulysses S. Grant's manpower commanders that winter campaign along the Susquehanna River Valley from November 24-December 2nd 1862 near present day Easton PA (near Latrobe). In 1865, during Reconstruction following America's return from the Civil War, Allentown became one of several places where black Americans were re-integrated into society after years of segregationist violence across much of America--an event which inspired Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation issued December 1st 1863 from his fourth night at Ford’s Theatre as US President. This integration also created significant economic opportunities for all sections of society based upon skills availability outside traditional white supremacist neighborhoods such as West Chester Township west of Interstate 80 while African American labor rapidly widened access to key manufacturing jobs throughout most large American cities during this time period creating what we now know as "the Great Black Migration".
